Did you wind up with copper deficiency from this?

As Healthgirl implied, chronic use of Zn-rich dental products can lead to Cu deficiency though my understanding is that this is rare.

Blanewt, you could talk with your health care team about this. If your Cu levels are abnormally low then Cu supplementation might be indicated.

These links might help you with this.

Here is an article from 2011, Dr. Weil:

A Threat From the Zinc in Denture Adhesive? - Ask Dr. Weil

The products in US have changed since then. Please read any labels on whatever product you have, carefully.

Neuropathy is very common. Statins used by millions of people
are causing neuropathy in far greater numbers alone, and are doing damage this very minute. Many other drugs given by doctors also cause nerve damage. The fluoroquinolones Cipro, Levaquin and Avelox are also very damaging. There are many others that can be located on Google.

Went from being 100% healthy to wheelchair. No docs could figure it out. Would like to talk to someone who has it. No feeling from fingertips to armpits and from waist to toes. Balance is really bad.

Did you consume large amounts of the zinc form back before 2011 or so?

There are over 100 causes of neuropathy, and no we have not had a poster here who was using the old formula so much to get the toxicity.

We are used to hearing that doctors tell the patients, they don't know. One thing though is they typically won't admit another doctor's prescribing drugs that actually cause PN. They stick up for other doctors, or won't tell you if what they gave YOU recently or for a long time caused the neuropathy.

Idiopathic is the medical term for "they don't know".
If you visit our subform here on this location, there are informational posts to explain neuropathy in more detail. Many doctors just have no clue.

Hi blanewt

It's possible your neuropathy could be due to a different (or multiple) causes besides the zinc poisoning. Did you have specific blood testing done for zinc levels at the time you became physically impaired and have you had follow up testing done since stopping using the denture cream? Besides the physical symptoms did you have any cognitive dysfunction during that time? ie memory lapses, mild speech impairment, confusion etc. Headaches are another possible symptom.

I found the loss of balance, headaches, and some of the cognitive issues improved significantly, but gradually, within a few months of stopping the zinc.
The symptoms of zinc poisoning can be also similar to those of Vit B12 deficiency and other nutrient or metabolic disorders.

I was using a lot of Fixodent when I first got neuropathy symptoms but I don't know if that contributed to it. I was taking a medium level dose of Norvasc blood pressure med and eating tons of grapefruit which inhibits the enzyme that metabolizes it (the literature said it didn't do that with Norvasc at the time, now I read it does) and neuropathy is listed as a possible side effect of that med. I also have increased symptoms consistently from my COPD meds so if the Fixodent contributed but there is no way to know.

I don't think I ever had my zinc levels tested but was a little low on iron on and off. I was also taking a multivitamin with zinc.
