Sudden onset of numbness in left hand

Hello Friends,

My neuropathy in my feet has not changed in approx 6 months, no improvement, but no change either.

However I am having a scare today!

After I woke up I noticed that the tip of my thumb, and next finger were tingling, as thought they were a sleep. I thought possibly they were just a sleep so I shook my hand and did not think much of it.

Then as the morning progressed, the tingling got worse, and now my thumb and fingers are all feeling as though they are asleep, and a bit in the flat of my hand too. It feels like I pinched a nerve in my wrist. (I had carpal tunnel when I was pregnant, years ago, and had this sensation, but it went away after I had my daughter. I also had carpal tunnel when I dental assisted, but that to went away after I stopped dental assisting.) So I must be prone to this disorder.

The neuropathy in my feet started completely different, slow slow, not like this, so I am hoping this tingling it is not a FAST onset of neuropathy in my hand.

Then I though maybe I am having a stroke, but if I were to be a judge it feels more like a nerve thing going on then a numbness from a stroke, and I have no other symptoms.

So, maybe possibly I slept on that wrist and caused a temporary nerve condition that is causing this? My neck has been bothering me lately too, but I don't know if that could be causing tingling in my hand.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Patty

Try putting an ice pack on the wrist..that used to help me.

If this is a temporary thing...like you strained it or slept on it funny, an OTC Salonpas patch may help.
I use the ones with methyl salicylate in them. They take down any inflammation from minor strains quickly.

Apply the ice pack or patch along the wrist area below the thumb. That is where the nerve goes to the thumb and first 2 fingers.

I had terrible carpal tunnel when I was pregnant but most of it resolved after I delivered. It still flares up now and then. I use the splints at night to protect the wrist if I get warning signs.

I'd do some gentle range of motion stretches for the neck first since it has been bothering you and then more down and out to the arms and hands.

Sharon Butler has a repetitive strain book that show good gentle stretches that might be helpful for both areas.. her book is in most libraries.
She also has a website, www.selfcare4rsi.com.

The nerves of the arms/hands do originate in the c spine/neck and travel down around the muscles, tendons and bones, so they can get irritated or pinched anywhere along the line.
Where the symptoms show is not always where the cause originates from.

Thank you mrsD., and Jo* mar,

I placed an ice pack on my wrist last night, and today the tingling is completely gone, as though it never existed. Now those are the ailments that I don't mind so much, all though I get worked up when they first arrive.:D

Jo*mar, I definitely need to do neck streaches as well, I am sure that would help my neck aches and pains.

Thanks again, I appricaite both of your inputs.

Patty
