Trileptal and Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN)
 

Hello Everyone,

By any chance does anyone know about Trileptal causing Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) or has anyone ever developed this as a result of taking Trileptal or even another AED?

Has anyone gotten itchy with bumps, and feel a sensation of prickly heat on throughout their body? I understand this is quite rare but I'm sure it still happens. I did find this bit of information if anyone would care to read about it:

"As of April 19, 2005 the FDA and Novartis pharmaceuticals (the manufacturers of Trileptal) issued a new warning regarding oxcarbazepine. Serious dermatological reactions, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN), have been reported in both children and adults in association with Trileptal use. SJS and TEN may start with fever and flu-like symptoms followed by a rash, with or without ulcers of the mucous membranes, that quickly progresses to blisters that burn and are painful. If you notice a rash while taking oxcarbazepine, you should call your doctor immediately, and be prepared to describe it. Very rarely, these rashes are serious and with prompt attention and treatment, most potentially dangerous rashes will resolve completely."

I hope it's alright if I post this here. I will post this in the Epilepsy Forum as well. Perhaps someone has experienced this as well.

With this rash if you have developed it. You really need to get to the hospital and get it checked out. This is very dangerous. Please have it checked out.

There is another rash that looks a lot like this rash that is less dangerous.
So please look into these.

I haven't ever had a member of my family have this rash but I've heard a lot about it. I have known some that have dealt with it.

Yes, trileptal is in the family they talk about with it. But it really doesn't matter any meds can cause it.

As Donna has said, SJS can be induced by a vast number of medications, but some AED's, including Trileptal, do carry specific warnings for SJS because they have been associated with an increased incidence of it. However, any rash that appears while starting any new medication should be seen by a doctor.

Furthermore, a full body rash is always of concern. Full body involvement indicates a systemic problem, so this kind of outbreak must always be seen promptly, even if one is not on any medications.

Please, please call your doctor. If you are unable to reach him/her, I might go to an urgent care center or even an ER. I hate to suggest ER to people, but the point here is simply: an MD needs to see you promptly.

I hope you are fine. You are right that SJS is not common. Other, less serious reactions are more common. You are probably ok, but please be safe and get checked.

Thank you ALL for the awesome replies!

I gave the itchy, annoying red bumps one more day (today) and they seem not as severe but are still mildly present.

Will see how they are tomorrow and take it from there. Using good judgement here as they are not that bad right now.

I'm thinking I'll be OK. Thank you for the concern everyone.

Thanks for checking in. I was very concerned about your post.

The bumps being less severe is a very good sign - I am really glad to hear that!

Common sense is good, but I do still think it is important to report this event to your doctor. You can tell him the rash seems better, but by involving him you give him a chance to guide you. Then, he can make the call as to whether someone needs to see this rash... before the "evidence" disappears. ;)

Hi,

Make two phone calls on Thursday morning: doctor and pharmacist.

It would stink if you waited until crisis mode and tried to get some help over the weekend when your best option then would be to go to the ER or Urgent Care.
Also take some pictures with your phone if you can so you can notice it changing from day to day.

Your rash has to be on record with your doctor so he/she knows your rash history for future purposes.
Are you continuing on the medication?
