Wisdom Tooth extraction site still tender
 

I had my 2 top wisdom teeth removed on Aug 12. I assumed by the 19th I could have soft foods. I made perogies in the oven and they were soft enough for me to chew without being mushy. the edges however were sharp I guess is the way you could put it. My right side was feeling fine and wasn't hurting anymore until I had the perogies. Now I'm worried I messed up the healing and will need more stitches even thought there isn't any pain today it just feels "weird". I'm not having any issues with my left side.

I'm assuming I irritated the area quite a bit when I was eating. I tried to stay away from the edges of the perogy. but since it was a week after my initial surgery I thought I'd be able to eat something other then soup.

I get the bottom ones removed Monday (the 26) will I have to get more stitches because of this or will the area just feel "weird" for a while while it heals? (I get the stitches that are there on both sides removed before they take out the bottom wisdom teeth.)

What were your post op instructions? What were your wisdom teeth impacted by? Bone? Are your sutures black in color?

I would GUESS that if your top and bottom teeth are impacted by the same thing, you will probably have sutures for the bottom. Just a guess...Bryanna is the dental expert.

Ask your oral surgeon what he/she meant by "soft diet'?

Hi Jae,

A soft diet consists of foods that are soft and require little to no chewing. It is soft veggies, fruits, eggs, smoothies, yogurt, things of that consistency. A pierogy requires a lot of chewing and should be avoided.

Your description of the site feeling "weird" doesn't explain very much. So it's not possible to decipher what you mean by "weird".

Usually the surgical site is not re-sutured a week after the extraction unless it has to be cleaned out again. Hopefully you have not disturbed the clot and the site continues to heal well. Just remind the OS to take a look at the extraction sites on monday. Keep rinsing with warm salt water only... no mouthwash as the ingredients are very irritating and can prevent the site from healing completely.

Also, do a google search for soft food diet so you have things to eat for the next 2 weeks since you are having your lowers removed on monday.

Okay I will get her to do that. it was just my regular dentist that did it and didn't really give me much post-op instructions just told me to stay away from straws. I only had a perogy because I thought after a week it would be be okay to have something other then soup (she, nor the dental assistant didn't tell me what foods to stay away from.) I mainly just had the potato filling after and left the rest. I was trying my best to chew with my front teeth, so I'm not to sure what happened. but I know for the week after Monday to stay away from perogies.

What I mean by "weird" is a tenderness feeling still but just on my right side... It feels like its along my last tooth on that side like the stitches or something.

Like I said though there was no bleeding or anything just knew whatever I did wasn't right. and I'm not in any pain But I will for sure stay away from anything I have to chew.

I have a couple more questions though, I've been doing my salt water rinses, I'm stay away from mouthwash. But when will it be okay for me to start using it again, along with a "normal" brushing considering I got both sets removed at different times. I'm wondering the same thing regarding food (like the perogies).

Your dentist is suppose to give you detailed post operative instructions. Sorry they did not do that :/

You should be brushing your teeth normally at this point. After you get the next two removed... brush carefully for about 1-2 weeks and then resume normal brushing.

Mouthwash that contains chemicals, alcohol, preservatives, dyes..... is never okay to use as it causes dehydration of the oral tissue and leads to tooth decay.

Question about mouthwash though, I was told to use a mouthwash with floride in it and so I use Crest Prohealth alcohol free... is there one I should use? (eventually, once everything is healed)

There is nothing therapeutic or healthy about these ingredients. Google each one (other than water) and decide if you feel it's okay to rinse with. It is unfortunate but since most dentists are unaware of what is actually in the mouthwashes that they recommend to their patients, it is up to the patient to either just follow blindly or read the label.

Mouthwash with fluoride is not a necessary part of oral hygiene. It really serves little to no value. Thorough tooth brushing with a soft bristle brush, flossing, and tongue scraping every day will keep the plaque and bad bacteria to a minimum. Eating a nutritious diet free of sugar and empty carbs will keep the saliva healthy and reduce the occurrence tooth decay.

Went and got the bottom right wisdom tooth removed today (ouchie) getting the left one removed in 2 weeks. I guess they don't normally remove the bottom ones at the same time, if you're just getting it done in the office?

I found this one hurt more then getting the top ones done, why is that Bryanna? Oh and My ear was numb afterwards... my friend told me that was normal but what I want to know is why does it get numb?

Hi Jae,

Some dentists will remove both teeth at once, others prefer not to. One of the reasons to not do it is because of the amount of anesthetic that is needed to remove each tooth. When you remove lower teeth the tongue gets numb on the same side that the tooth is being removed. If you anesthetize both sides of the lower jaw, then the entire tongue will be numb and this can be a problem for some people.

Also, most general dentists are not very experienced at removing wisdom teeth... so they're not going to take on more than they feel they can handle. An oral surgeon may be more inclined to remove both lowers at the same time.... as that is the type of dentistry that he does every day!

Generally the lower wisdom teeth are encased in more bone than the upper wisdom teeth. So removing the lowers can be a bit more difficult to get out.

It is not unusual for the ear to feel numb after the injection for a lower wisdom tooth. The bundles of nerves run differently in every person so you may have some nerves that branch out near your ear. This will most likely go away completely and not be of any concern.

Last night while taking my medication before bed, I had this sharp pain in my jaw, I figured I just opened my mouth to wide.

This may seem like a silly question but can medication get "stuck" in between your jaw and cheek? When I took Advil last night it went down fine but my medication didn't and that's when I noticed the sharp pain in my jaw. It didn't last long but it really really hurt (it didn't last long just for a couple seconds. Is it normal for your jaw to hurt when taking medication if you accidentally open your mouth to wide after a wisdom tooth extraction? It'd now swollen and hurts to touch.
