First time

Hello, everyone. After reading some of your stories, I realise that I am not alone in what is happening to me.
I have just been diagnosed with peripheral neuropaty and have had all the tests. While my sugar is a bit high, I don't have diabetes, nor anything else that was tested for.
I have burning feet and tingling up to my knees, waves of weakness that pass down both arms and into my hands (causing me to drop things that I happen to be carrying at the time - very embarrassing!), numbness in my face and terribly restless legs, although I don't know if that is connected.
I know of no one who has even heard of this before and am very pleased to find this forum so I can discuss it with people who don't think I am imaging things.
I've just started taking Lyrica, which is beginning to help with the burning, but is making my job - high school teacher - just that little bit more stressful because it makes me sleepy and dizzy.
Thank you for listening to me whinge.

Hello and Welcome

:Wave-Hello: You have picked a great place to share your experiences and ask questions about PN. There are very knowledgable people here.

I have been on Lyrica since last April. I take 150mg in the morning and another 150mg in the evening. If you have just started taking this medicine, this side effect should pass in time. I did not experience any tiredness. I only have PN in my feet. It has not progressed further and I have had this for about 4 years. I do have weakness in my hands and do drop things, like a piece of paper that you think you have a grip on and the next thing it is on the floor.

Are you taking any supplements/vitamins or any other prescription medication? Do you taking anything for the pain? Why don't you tell us a little more about yourself as in what tests you have had and the results. I am sure more people will chime in soon to lend their particular expertise.

Hi & welcome to this forum fellow Aussie ;)
When i read your post i zeroed in to the [ sugar a bit high ] as the cause of my PN was Prediabetes & low in B12, did you have a 3 -5 glucose tolerance test to come to that conclusion ? prediabetes is reversable and your nerves can regenerate once their in the right environment.

B12 helps repair damaged nerves, " Natures Own " have a b12 at 1000 mcg strength, its the only one in OZ that i know of that strength, blackmores are only have 100 mcg, not worth it, our b12 supplements are Cynocobalim which is still good there's nothing wrong with it but the prefered b12 is methylcobalamin which our american friends are lucky enough to be able to buy it off the shelves over there, but we can order in from overseas but works out about $70 a bottle, a bit steep for me, so i just stuck to Natures own 1000 mcg and shots of B12 Hydroxocobalamin of my quack.

Its best to buy some mega B as well, it helps the b12 work better, but best not to take it at the same time as the other b12 to work the best., i take my mega B at breakfast and the b12 any time during the day.

For info about b12 off a lovely lady thats helped us all so much and who knows a hell of a lot more than most doc's do, is at http://roseannster.googlepages.com/home.

I would also urge you to read the stickies in the front page up top, there's a lot of real good info, the more you know the better it is.
ps - the more info you can give us the better .
good luck
Brian :)

Welcome

Welcome to you Aussiegirl!! We're glad you found us. This is a great group of people here and I've made a lot of friends. They also have a combined medical knowledge about PN and some other things, that equals or exceeds most doctors.

Have you checked out www.lizajane.org ? A lot of us are using this to keep track of our medical records. And while I'm on the subject, it is really important to get and keep a copy of all medical records. It can save you lots of time, money and exasperation in times to come if you have to see other doctors.

Again, welcome!!
Billye
