extra vertebrae in lumbar
i have been told after going to a doc with complaints of
shin pain heaviness in legs tingling legs/feet that i have an extra vertebrae in my lumbar spine but it is NO big deal and not the cause of my pain (i also have ehlers danlos syndrome, hip stability issues, flat feet, knock knees) i have only received an xray as the doc didnt think my sx were significant enough to show anything on an mri is this true? i am physical therapy and i wonder how that bone is going to affect my strengthening routine. |
Hi and welcome.
I think you should have an MRI done, read by a qualified radiologist. From there demand your report to have in case you go to a specialist. I'm not saying it's a huge issue because I honestly don't know. I'm sorry. What I do know is I would want that MRI if having weakness in legs, especially with a finding that should probably be investigated further. Good luck! |
I want to add hat my daughter has ehler's Danlos, hypermobility type and has MRI's every two years...period.

thanks!
people dont seem to understand eds or take it seriously..except for my pt. it sucks |
They don't understand it because they truly don't. They don't know about it.
Most doctors don't even recognize the names of some of daughters diagnoses. It's hard. Don't let that be an excuse , though, not for you but not for the next patient as well. Ignorance of the law isn't an excuse when before a judge is it? Ignorance of a diagnosis isn't an excuse for a doctor. Educate them! I understand, hon. |
sounds like a transitional vertabra,i have this and it can cause weekness in legs.

Having an extra vertebra is common, BUT my Neurosurgeon said that it DID cause my spine to become unstable, and thus caused some herniations. So it DID make a difference in my spine. I guess there just wasn't enough room for them all.
X-rays that you had aren't enough. They don't show the discs. Discs are SOFT tissue, they aren't bone, and X-rays only show bone. You need an MRI with and without contrast material. Ask your doctor to have one done. I'm sure he will if you ask. Get the report from the MRI -- you can get one if you ask. Then bring it here and post it. We can help you decipher it. Best of luck and God bless. Hugs, Lee |
im a bit disappointed, this is all my report says
"mild lumbar curvature. 6 vertebral body with lumbar eyes to s1 segment. normal disc height. pedicles visualized at each level. normal density. normal facet" how do i know if im sacralized or lumbarized? ive read this can make a big difference |
if my transverse process was enlarged, do you guys think it would say on the report
whats the difference between an enlarged trans process and a transitional vertebrae? thanks!!!!!!!! nm i think they made a typo in my report "lumbar eyes" is lumbarized |
