EMG Test: Easy Peezy or Scary Stuff

About to get an EMG next week. Is this procedure a breeze or is it difficult?

Too many factors to say how you will do, but let me give you a synopsis of my two EMGs.

In 2012 I had one done in the fall. It was after ~year of burning, tingling and zapping started in my ankles, rather, it was one of the first places that made my body go a bit ape.

The jolts were more jarring thsn painful. I was offered breaks between measures, but wanted to continue.

After my primary got the results diabetic neuropathy was the conclusion.

I had an EMG/NCSdone last year by a neurologist who is treating me now. The results were similar. The test left me sore for a few days. Pretty darn sore. I'm not sure if it is due to being worsening conditions, how I felt that day or what, but I was sweating. It hurt this time.

It was enough to make me agree with my current primary- we know what you have. I question whether there is more than a diabetic component, as massive positive change has been met with exacerbation, but so it goes.

You are searching for that. This is a tool that can help you sort that out. Results do vary.

Welcome. Sorry for what brings you here, though you are in a great place for knowledge and support.

my best,

Jon

i have had numerous emg/ncs done on my hands, legs and feet, over the past 12 years now. while i would not describe them as being pleasant, i dont consider them as anything to be concerned about doing discomfort wise.

May not be comfortable, but it's really no big deal.

For some it hurts/painful. Others not so much. A lot of times it can depend on who is doing the testing. It can also depend on what is wrong with you as to hurting or painful or not so much.

Having it done 4 times I can say its not my favorite thing, like others have said it all depends who does the test. Its not painful just not pleasant either if that makes sense.

Good Luck hope they find a simple solution to provide you relief.

I agree with most of the posters. I've had it... hmm... 3 times I think. A bit uncomfortable (read: I wouldn't chose it for fun) but no really big deal.

It's nothing to worry about. The worst EMG that I've had was from an resident that was not confident. The EMG tech had to come in and help her out...and that resulted in extra zaps to me. Even this was not a big deal.

Not too bad. I had 2. Good luck.

My EMG was normal
