Stem Cell possible cure?
 

I have just returned from my Dermatologist who treats my skin cancer. In discussion with him about my PN he stated that stem cell technology will find a "cure" within the next 2 years. I have a lot of respect for him as he saved my life several years ago when he detected a melanoma and he is one of New Zealand's leading dermatologists. Before embarking on an extensive Google search I thought I would see what you good people have to say on the subject.

Two years may be a bit optimistic. The first human trials to treat the CNS in Russia left the patients with tumors. As a result, trials were delayed in the US until the technology could be improved. Just recently, only the second crushed spinal cord patient in the US began stem cell treatment and some experts are dubious about the trial. Further, as noted, these trials only relate to patients with crushed spinal cords. The stem cells are encoded to grow into the cells that make the meylin sheath that covers the spinal cord. Even if these trials are successful, it's a big leap to get from the treatment of spinal cord injuries to the treatment of patients with various types of peripheral neuropathy. Perhaps 5-10 years is a more realistic goal.

Well, yes and no? It's for some neuropathies...
 

but, mostly of the 'autoimmune' type. Getting diagnosed can be a lifetime challenge at times.

Trial #10 is likely what you are hearing about. The eligibility requirements are strict, and insurance approval plus out of pocket costs aren't cheap. I do know of several people who are going through it or have successfully completed this process. But it can come with risks? You mite not be eligible or meet all of the criteria.
Remember that Neuropathies can be either Toxic, inherited or acquired autoimmune reactions. Please look into these sites and let us know where you are 'fitting' for now. And, please keep us up to date on your progress?
Good luck and don't give up hope. Seems like your dermatologist is more up to date than many other docs! Tho optimistic as to availability to one and all tho.

Sounds like my PN is similar to yours but not quite as advanced.

Stem cell treatment has been in the news concerning PNs that come from ganglionitis. I've posted that article here a few times.

It may be available someday, but I think 2 yrs is rather fast.
Things typically take much longer to trickle down to the patient level from research. Sometimes they never make it.
