what is neurontin?

Hi all,\
Just wondering what neurontin is. Is it an antisizure med? It looks as if that is the way it is classified on my insurance page. Pm doc has upped it to 300 am and 600 pm. also put me on cymbalta 30 mg for 1 wk then up to 60 mg, and percocet 3X a day. any help would be great.
thanks
Mary

yes it is

Yes, neurontin is a seizure med--that is one of the reasons it is so important to titrate up and down when coming off of it. :)

I know I know Pick me!!

Neurontin is a drug prescribed to patients who suffer from Grand Mall Seizures but also it is giving to us fine folks with RSD/CRPS since alot of docs seem to be under the impresion that it helps to combat neuro pain. I was on it for quite a while back in 2000 -2001. It did help me some. One of the biggest side effects I noted was feeling really giddy all the time. Almost in a drunkard state but still very alert. Other folks around me would notice it big time. That is why I quit taking it. I was also told that If you have been on it for a long time as with any anti seizure medication, if you are not careful when going off of it, you can end up with seizures. I hope this helps. Good Luck!!!

thanks for the information. This is what happened. I saw the PM for the 1st time last month. He said that he would start me on antisizure meds at the next visit, as he didn't what to overload my system. that's why when I saw it on my formulairy I was concerned. I guess it was just a misunderstanding on my part. there was a thread that talked about getting a medical alert bracelet if you were on antisizure meds as it could have bad results if you were in an accident and no one knew you were on it. I was waiting to see doc today before I ordered one, thinking he was going to add it today. I was feeling so bad when I saw him that I don't think I was with it. My bp was 184 over 102. My foot had started to really hurt (last month) and when that happens my bp goes way up. at least I now know.
Thanks
Mary

It's called gabapentin (sp?). It's also good as a neuropathic pain medication.

I take Neurontin. I take a high dose of it, 1200 mgs every 8 hours. It helps with the burning & aching in my feet....alot. I think I am one of the few oldies around here that can take it without all the nasty side effects that one can have with it. But then nasty side effects can happen to anyone on about any drug that we take for RSD. Taking any less for me is a waste of my time as it does not help with the pain at all. I have been on Neurontin since 2003. The worst side effect for me is being tired & sleepy. But all the meds I am on have that same side effect.

Debbie,
thank you so much for the information. Doc just upped me to 300 am and thaen 600 at bedtime. The first couple of days it made me sleepy, but then nothing. what is giving me a hard time is the cymbalta. Took it last nite for the first time ,woke up to feed the horses, arms and legs felts so weak. went back in went to bed and work up at 3.30 the afternoon. I hope that gets better..otherwise nothing will get done...

I was put on Cymbalta about 6 months ago. It took about 6 weeks for the side effects to go away. They were no fun. My doc gave me Neproxin in the meantime to counteract them. It helped a great deal. Once the six weeks were up and I felt comfortable enough going solo with the Cymbalta I weened off the Neproxin and Bang!! No Problems!! Cymbalta works just like it is suppose to with no bad side effects anymore! I hope this helps!
