Grandson and Neurologist

Hi - I am a grandmother of a beautiful grandson who has hydrocephalus. The NS has referred him to a neurologist for assessment. Raffi is suffering from headaches and has had an MRI recently and the NS said everything was okay. My daughter still thinks the headaches are shunt related. He has had five operations since July 7/07. He is seven years old. He was not born with Hydro - he contacted it in the hospital. He was a 26 weeker and weighed in at 1 kilo (2.2 lbs). We are Canadians, although Raffi is Canadian and Mexican.

What will a neurologist do to find out about his headaches?

Thanks very much for any info.

Hello HG!

It's very nice to meet you. I myself have no experience with hydrocephalus, but we do have a forum here dedicated exclusively to that condition. I would suggest posting your question there, where you'll have a lot better chance of getting advice from people who have real experience. I definitely hope that your grandson starts feeling better very soon! Prayers and good wishes to all of you!

Idealist.

I assumed that NeuroTalk Communities meant that the people connected to this blog had something to do with neurologists. Am I wrong? If I am right I was just wondering what tests they do for example, headaches. Does anyone else have any experience with a neurologist?

Thanks in advance for your response.

HG

Hello again HG
I am not too sure which blog you are referring to? maybe someone has NeuroTalk linked in a blog?

We here at NeuroTalk Forums are a community of members with many different neurological and other health conditions, as well as some healthcare professionals, and also some members who are here simply to offer support and share information.

Neurologists do a large variety of tests based on the symptoms that a patient is experiencing.

Welcome! :)

You're Raffi's grandma? Marilou and I have been in touch on some other forums, private msg, and on the phone. :) It's great to "see" you here. :) Please feel free to PM me here (click on my name) or write me here on the boards with any questions I can answer for you. I am 40 and was dx'ed with hydro at 3 weeks old.

As far as I know, there are no docs here. We're all just patients and family members dealing with neuro this-or-that. :)

As for what a neuro can do...that remains to be seen, I think. I have personally had a long history with neuros and trust them about as far as I can throw them . I last saw one 13 years ago, in spite of a lifelong epilepsy history, but my nsg, who's known me all my life, now handles all my brain matters. :) A neuro might have some thoughts on pain management, but I don't think he can do much else. Neuros are not licensed in surgery, so all they can do is treat symptoms. Personally, I think Raffi needs another nsg opinion. :(

Raffi

Thank you lizzard for answering my question. I am reading all the information that my daughter is getting and I must say it is helping her not feel so inept and giving her more confidence to keep on fighting for Raffi. I agree she should get another opinion.
