17,000 Pets Poisoned by Chocolate (Topix)

(Topix) The vets say that the high levels of theobromine - a stimulant - which naturally occurs in chocolate can lead to negative effects on pets' central nervous systems, and that the darker and more expensive the chocolate used, the more dangerous it can be.

Toxins to pets

Dogs are also hightly suseptible to poisoning from grapes and raisins. They cause kidney failure. Raisins are especially dangerous because they are naturally sweet and dogs are attracted to eating them.

I knew about the chocolate, but not the dates etc.
Not that I would think to feed the dog same, but they do get into the bucket of bird fruit that I empty from the aviaries sometimes?
I will be more diligent from now on!
Thanks.

Reminds me of what happened yesterday!!! I had a chocolate chip type treat in my bag yesterday and it fell on the floor. I went in my room to discover Bruna chowing down on it, and I just about fell over! She seems to be doing just fine today, thank goodness.

Doody...WATCH out sweetie! My doxie has jumped into my purse a few times to try to get treats. She is sneaky and fast. One time, I had my blood pressure pills in there and my dh freaked out more than I did (I found this most interesting) and we rushed her to the emergency vet cause it seemed like some were missing. Doxies are adorable and devilish clowns who will stop at nothing to get what smells or looks like a treat. Glad Bruna is doing well...she is a cutie pie!

Thanks Vowel Lady! Yes they are sneaky. I know she has a good memory and is very capable of learning, sneaky little thing. When we go outside now, she heads straight for my flower garden because she knows there is a baby bunny in there!!! Hard to train because they are stubborn little things! LOL

Yes I know about those pill bottles! I try very hard not to leave any laying around as she has found them and started chewing on them! She had my Prozac bottle one day and I was horrified! Luckily she didn't get all the way through. Very skeery!!!!

Step away from the chocolate.

I read an article that came my way about Dogs and chocolate. A dog isn't going to fall over dead from a chocolate chip cookie or candy bar. It actually takes quite a bit of chocolate for a dog to have harmful effects. My dogs would all be dead by now as from time to time they have all snook into the goodie drawer.

And it's a darn good thing too Doodle because Bruna has several times gotten to my almost empty bowl of ice cream drenched in chocolate syrup, LOL! :D

Take good care of our pets.

Ice cream drenched in chocolate is my passion Doody. I usually get Yogurt ice cream. Anyway we all mean wellness for our precious pets. I have a little Italian greyhound. If you know the breed, you will understand what I mean by this next sentence, me, me ,me, its all about me, and she always has that look on her face that says "What have you done for me lately?"
When our Golden Retriever, Treasure, became ill with an inflamed pancreas, our vet told us that it could have happened by giving him bites of hot dog and
hamburger. You just never know. I guess if we didn't give them bites from the
table, they would be better off, thats for sure.
