Post op problems coming up the rear...gross...
 

My surgeon put me on mirilax and stool softeners so that there wasn't pressure on the stitches from surgery.
But of course it is causing much difficulty...lots of gas from the mirilax, and now the hemmroids (sp) are so bad...
I think I need to call the surgeon's office to see what I can do other than the typical things one does for this problem...
Is there a local anesthetic that you can buy OTC to ease the pain?

You can use prep H, and there is tucks wipes, but if you are desperate, you can use oragel. Gross, yes, but since its safe to use in your mouth for tooth pain, its ok to use on your fanny for other pain.

Sitz baths really help. like taking a warm bath just to soak your sore backside. If its burning from the pain of the stomach acid coming out, you can use maalox liquid or mylanta liquid. Since it kills stomach acid in your tummy, it will really cut the burn on your heinie.

Barriers help too, like Desitin creme, or A&D ointment.

If you are in that much pain, you may have thrombosed or clotted off one of your hemmorhoids. That can be VERY painful! Its best to have it checked out. If that is the case, they will have to open it to pull the clot out. it feels dramatically better once its over.

Rocking chairs will help you move the gas along, and heating pads will help it to disperse.

Also, if it's hard to sit, get a ring shaped pillow or make one by rolling up an afghan. It makes it much easier to get comfortable. :hug:

Oragel is a very small tube... not much in there. You can use it in a pinch...but it is basically just a real pinch of stuff.

The Americaine is a large tube designed for your fanny pain. It also comes with an applicator if needed.

There are glands up "there" and if your pain continues, or if you get a fever, you must see a doctor ASAP... infections can come up fast in that area and catch you off guard. Antibiotics would be used in that case.

If it's bleeding, would there be a clot?
I hate this almost as much as giving birth...this reminds me of the weeks post-delivery, when it hurt so much to sit...grrr.

to clot off means that the blood IN the hemmorhoid is clotted. it will form a bubble, and the circulation that used to exist in and out of it, will be clotted off. Its PAINFUL! after a few days the pain will either drive you to beg someone to fix it, or it will break open and you will see clotted blood in the bowl after a bowel movement. it can leak and drain for several days after a rupture on its on. its RARE to bleed to death from something like that, unless you are on blood thinners, and so forth. it tends to be self limiting.

I do hope you are feeling tons better this afternoon.

btw, sitting puts TONS of pressure on your backside. Either stand up or lay down. Try to avoid sitting till this heals.

You may have a fissure. Best way to deal with a fissure is to clean the area off with a hydrogen peroxide compress ... Tucks can be VERY irritating.

If you have pink when you compress this area (our filters here remove the A word), then it can be a simple fissure.

Once it is clean, you can either 1) use triple antibiotic for a day or two , and then 2) move on to A and D ointment. This will heal it up pretty fast and form a protective barrier. Don't apply any ointment over a non-cleaned area.
The Americaine is really nice....it is a clear non staining gel base, and very effective. 20% benzocaine with a anti-bacterial
ingredient called benzalconium chloride. I used this 28 yrs ago when I had a fissure after my son was born. It has never failed me. Americaine can be used for burns, or painful insect bites as well. I usually have this gel/ointment last more than a year or so. It seems to never go bad. It is a great thing to have in your medicine cabinet...you never know what life will throw at you!

Thanks all...doesn't seem to hurt quite as much as earlier...so Tucks irritates it, hmmm? My pcp told me earlier in the year to use them...they burn like the devil.

I see the surgeon on Tuesday...we'll see if he still wants me to stay on mirilax...I hate the gassiness and bloating. And the noises...my DH is constantly tsk-tsking me. As if I'm doing this on purpose...grrrr.

For chronic gas issues.... simethicone is really good to keep it moving along... GasX or products like Maalox advanced with calcium/simethicone. I have a congenital GI problem that would be very dunning without simethicone. I use it just about every day.

TUCKS is a nasty product...long ago promoted to doctors.
Please switch to 3% medicinal hydrogen peroxide. You will see and feel the difference immediately! Hydrogen peroxide does NOT burn... but it kills bacteria in a flash!
