I have not had surgery for my cervical dystonia but I do take Botox injection for it every 3 months. Controls it pretty much but there is some pain involved in the actual injections. Not sure you've looked into the Botox or not, if not give it a try.

I have dystonia. The only surgery that I know specifically for dystonia is Deep Brain Dystonia and that is done usually at last resort. They won't randomly do surgery on your neck unless there is a severe herniation or specific condition ie bone spurs something like that. My suggest to you is to ask your neuro if you can, but find a good massage person, swim, or at minimum bet into the water, and be good to yourself. With the neck I find purchasing a good quality pillow, and a harder bed... maybe thats preference, but the pain I had trying to turn in the softer beds were unbearable. I wish you all the best.

Hi 2bluetoday,

There is a surgery that can be done specifically for cervical dystonia. I don't know of anyone who has had the surgery done, however, my daughter, who was born with cervical dystonia, is interested in this procedure.

Hi Snoopy,
This is something that was offered to me but scared me to death. Its done by a pain doc , usually in his/her office and basically they burn the nerve and reset it. Not specifically for dystonia like deep brain stimulation is. There are many injections that are done to the neck to help relieve pain but often for dystonic patients botox is used, in large amounts. There is also in person support groups , that are helpful to connect with others finding good docs, the key is to have a movement neurologist if you think its dystonia.

I have constant stress in the bone at the bottom of the back of the neck.while I'm awake. It is also a strain to turn my head to the right. I have had one botox treatment of six needles. I'm on the waiting list for the second injections.
