gummy vitamins

So I just noticed in the store today how they are now selling gummy vitamins. I saw coq10 and vitamin b12. Although these gummy type vitamins come in small dosages, 50 mg for the coq10 and 250 mcg for the vitamin b12, it says take one gummy vitamin a day. and when you look at the back of the package it says a specific warning take only as directed, do not exceed suggested dosage. I'm assuming this directive was made so that some guy wouldn't overly enjoy the vitamins and get carried away.

But as we all know with vitamin b12, the using of them is to put into terms "loose" in other words up to 5000 mcg. I have once in my days taken two 1000 mcg jarrow tablets, and i was wondering if there was anything wrong with that?

Just as in coq10, regularly the packages come in 100mg, 200mg, 300mg, 400mg. But the 100mg would suggest 1-2 capsules daily, when the dosages can be up to 400mg.

I'd say...

Forget the gummies....

Go with what has a track record.

Hello there from UK....Your "gummy" comments caught my eye, as I've been hunting through online Supps pages, last 2 weeks, Mainly CoQ10 and Ubiquinol and seen loads of these in Softgels (if this is the same thing) and having to guess as to what Dosage is appropriate to try when starting either Ubiquinol or CoQ10.., particularly Ubiquinol, for the first time.......is 400mg a recommended upper limit?

Thanks for your list of Supplements/Vits. as well as the observations and comments... and re. one in particular....R-Lipoic acid....I'm about to order a short-list of Supps, inc R-Lipoic, to try them, as suggested in "Neuropathy does improve" as posted by Liza Jane and Wing42's 3-part"A program to heal nerve damage and reduce PN Symptoms".......

I'm very fortunate not to require pain-reduction meds, in fact not currently using Meds of any kind, though struggling hard with progressive Feet,legs,arm/hands/finger numbness that is worsening....and balance like a drunk!..... (Idiopathic PN 1.5yrs)...

So....... I'm focused on following up clues of every kind, in trying to find a way to reduce Numbness, or someone who'll post, who's maybe found a way to reduce it......

And, so.....I'm about to try the "Supps to heal PN symptoms" experimental route (as in above mentioned Posts)...and....I was interested to read your "R--Lipoic acid, too stimulating" comment....was it mentally/physically uncomfortable...or affecting energy levels, maybe?...I'm interested as I have it on my list of Supps to obtain...and had'nt heard or read anything about it having any unexpected effects, only that R-Lipoic was more effective, as a Supplement, compared with regular Lipoic Acid........would be useful to know what to expect in the event that it had this over-stimulating effect,
thanks.....

gummy...

a gummy in the US is a candy... gummy worms, gummy bears, etc. They are in the shape of various insects/animals.

Given the new concerns about mercury in corn syrup, getting your vits in a gummie is not a great idea.

The gummy vitamins are targeted to children. This is rather
dangerous, since kids may secretly steal them and consume them in high doses.

Exactly MrsD!!!!

They were giving out samples of them at Sam's. It was shocking to see how many parents grabbed extra and gave it to their kids. :(

I had a hard enough time with GrandMonkey and chewable Vit C. He always wanted more then one...no matter how tart. :p

I don't know it's just i felt a little strange, out of place, like my body chemistry wasn't right and it wasn't sitting well with me. I didn't feel nervous or anythign, but just couldn't sleep that well, and couldn't focus. but hey, it could just be me. I would suggest instead of starting out with 100 mg starting out with like 50 mg (also what mrsD suggested). or if that dose troubles you too, try going with the lower potency alpha lipoic acid at a higher dose.

Not everyone--

on Lipoic acid experiences these "revved-up" symptoms, but enough do that I suspect it may have somoething to do with the change caused by its insulin normalizing properties; for people who are prone, for whatever reasons, to wild swings in blood sugar, and the "ups and downs" in energy those tend to produce, havign a more steady blood sugar level might be interpreted as a feeling of revved-upness or agitation.

And, many such people are already taking B-vitamin supplements, which are also associated with feelings of increased energy, so this effect may be additive. I know I notice it when I'm tkaing 5000mcg/day of B12, as, say, compared with 1000mcg/day.

The usual conversion given for effectiveness of R-lipoic vs. alpha Lipoic is roughly 10 to 1--50mg R-lipoic is roughly equivalent to 500mg of Alpha. So if one is taking 100mg R-lipoic, that's a pretty big dose. I went down from 100mg R-lipoic/day to 50 without noticing a difference--a bit less expensive that way (though I wonder if it may be having an effect on my insulin profile during the day).

Thanks for the gummie info.....could only guess at what they were....possibly won't come across them in the UK but useful to know about possible Mercury Content....and avoiding them......

Also thanks for including Lipoic and R-Lipoic acid info/comment on an earlier Post, Vits list....

I saw 800mg per day on "important Links and stickies" page 2 #19 as a European, regular Alpha Lipoic, daily dose suggestion.....

As R-Lipoic Acid is more effective than regular Lipoic....I was curious if it was known how much of a dose reduction, when using R-Lipoic, would work and still be effective..ie down to 2/3rds, 1/2, 1/3rd?....,

I'm non-Diabetic....but I guess there's no sense in taking a high recommended dose if its not necessary, though maybe it would give extra health benefits?

still finalizing the Supps list....just trying to get it as correct as possible as ordering from USA online...can't get some of the things I'm looking for, locally and it often works out less expensive to order everything online from USA!......
thank you for your Posts and help...

Ray

R-lipoic also acts as an antioxidant...it is beneficial for other
reasons, besides blood sugar. (The blood sugar effects are basically side effects).

hi there...wishing you well, today, this stuff seems to have had quite an unsettling effect at 100mg.......I appreciate your Post re.the R-Alpha Lipoic Acid........really gave me something to think about....., particularly as quite a high daily dose of regular Alpha-Lipoic, per day, seems to be regarded as the norm.......

It looks like the required and "comfortable" Dose can vary quite a bit, between individuals...and, particularly, that starting on a fairly low dose, to begin with, is well worth considering, as well as starting on regular Alpha-Lipoic rather than the more potent R-Lipoic.....

thank you for sharing what happened.....seems like a case of taking it very gradually, in terms of dosage "and" Potency, when completely new to it......
thanks.....Ray
