Fred L. Henson

Fred Lee Henson, 65, of Fredericksburg, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 17, 2006, after a two-year battle with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) or Lou Gehrig's Disease, which robbed him of his speech, his ability to swallow and made breathing a full-time battle.

Fred was the son of Oma Lee and Fred Elmo Henson of Red Boiling Springs, Tenn. He came to Virginia in 1963 following his graduation from David Lipscomb University in Nashville with a degree in business administration. He was a leader in his church community, serving as a deacon of the Springfield, Fairfax and Spotsylvania Churches of Christ. He served on the board of directors of the REA Federal Credit Union and Rainbow Christian Services Children's Home of Gainesville. After moving to Fredericksburg, he was a volunteer at Mary Washington Hospital. He loved to talk to people and make new friends. He never met a stranger.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Linda Meacham Henson; his sons, Mark Lee Henson and his wife, Edie, of Fredericksburg, David Gegory Henson and his wife, Jennifer, of Chantilly and Christopher Aaron Henson and his wife, Alexis, of Charlottesville; and his daughter, Heather Lynn Henson Shephard and her husband, Darrin, of Bealeton. He was a proud father and grandfather and is survived by his grandchildren Helen Carole Henson, Lee Rolston Henson, Jayden Vaught Henson, Kendall Beatrice Henson, Teagan Gregory Henson and Lillian Grace Shephard. He is also survived by his brother, Roy Dean Henson of Clay County, Tenn.

A memorial service will be held Sept. 19, at 2 p.m. at Spotsylvania Church of Christ at 10609 Piedmont Road in Spotsylvania County. The family will receive guests after the service.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the ALS Association DC/MD/VA Chapter, 7507 Standish Place Rockville, Md., 20855 or online. Please support our walk for ALS research Oct. 22 in Washington by going to http://fightals.alsin fo.org and supporting or joining Team Henson.
