Weight gain caused by using Amitriptyline for PN?

Hi all,

Do any of you know anything about weight gain being caused by Amitriptyline (being used for PN)? I do know that Anti-depressants are known for often causing weight gain - there used to be a lot of info. on the Internet about this - but I have not been able to find any of late. I am taking 10 - 25mgs at night. Would this be enough to cause (otherwise unexplained) weight gain? Has anyone experienced this? Any information / thoughts would be greatfully appreciated.

Regards,
Christine.

I went to RxList and searched Amitryptilene
& got Elavil as the pure med
According to RxList.com
http://www.rxlist.com/elavil-drug.htm

SIDE EFFECTS: See also Warning section. Drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, fast heartbeat, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, changes in taste, weight gain, tiredness, or trouble urinating may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Also-regarding Elavil
Please Note: This brand name drug is no longer available in the US.

I don't think that that means you can't get it generically-probably can & do.

I was on 150 mg at night & 25 mg in the mornings, did help the burning but give me a terrible craving for sweet things.

I couldn't take this drug as it made my heart feel like it was going to rip out of my chest. I suffered terrible tachycardia and pvcs. It all affects us all so differently I guess...

Yes, Christine, Amitriptyline does cause weight gain. All anti-depressants that are primarily serotonin re-uptake inhibitors cause weight gain due to their anti-cholinergic effect.

I also gained weight on Amitriptyline. I took it for help sleeping at night and I had to increase to about 80 mg. I've been off of it for several years and now use lunesta and ambien for sleep. Good luck to you. These meds can be frustrating. Raina
