We are starting our own 'Survival' show! LOL
 

My husband and I take his Mom out every Monday for lunch. She lives in a nursing home so really looks forward to this. This is the scene. She hasn't had teethe for years. Had a set of dentures made a long time ago but didn't like them so just hasn't used any. So although she loves pork chops and steaks it takes her a long time to eat them. So now Medicaid and all it's wisdom has offered to buy her a new set of dentures. They will pay for the top teeth this year and the bottom two years from now.

So here we are. She is trying her hardest to get used to wearing these top teethe but since she hasn't had any teeth in her mouth for a long time the top teethe are really irritating her bottom gums. She has really been wanting a good beef pot pie. The closest we could get is the beef stew at Cracker Barrel. She could break up her biscuit in the stew. So we went and, get this, we out sat, out waited and out lasted most of the people in that place. It took her 90 minutes to eat her beef stew! So now we have our own Survival show!!!!

Awww.....bless her heart. I'm so glad that she enjoyed her lunch. It's funny how something as simple as beef stew can bring someone so much pleasure. I hope she gets to enjoy more of her favorites soon. :) I'm sure she looks forward to Monday's all week long.

We used to take DH's Mom out to eat at the little cafe in her home town. Since it was small and everyone knew everyone we just asked if they would cut her food up into small bites.

When the plate would arrive everything was nicely cut up and arranged nicely. We always gave Angie the waitress a generous tip as she was so good to do this for us.

When we went to larger restaurants she and I would split an order so I would just have it sent out on one plate with an empty plate. That way I could cut everything into manageable size and then serve her.

She always ordered dessert first and made sure she finished before the entre came.

She "passed" several years ago at 98 still mentally and physically sound but her heart just got tired.

We miss her so much but have so many memories especially the "I'll have dessert first who knows how long I will be around at my age." ;)

What a great attitude she had! I think we all should have dessert first.....just because! ;)

Doydie - What a great story! Thanks for sharing it. I think it is awesome that you and DH take her out like that. :hug: Those kinds of things are so important to people in nursing homes and they really look forward to them as well, more than people realize.

A little off topic but - Why in the heck did Medicare do that? That's just messed up. So for the next 2 years she gets to eat with only top teeth? And, could end up with trouble with her bottom gums. I really don't think that Medicare thinks these thing through. That's like telling someone they are only approved for a right lens and in 2 years they can get the left lens for their glasses. :rolleyes:

Her favorite ting to eat is a good thick juicy pork chop!!!!! We might as well make reservation to sit there for the whole afternoon when we do agree to take her somewhere for that!

It is a Medicaid thing about the dentures, not Medicare. And I am absolutely clueless about why.

My MIL has four children and only two of them regularly either go to see her or take her out. The other two just don't know what they are missing. One completely avoids her, hasn't seen her in about 2 years, the other will sometimes call her. When MIL lived in a senior high rise and rent was subsidized this child would go to see her when money was needed. Now it's just a phone call every now and then. I don't know why kids treat their parents like that.

I know that my own Mom irritates me with her forgetfulness but I don't know what in the world I'll be like when I'm 86 years old! My Mom lives in an assisted living facility. Some of them are assisted living and others are like my Mom who is independent living. She recently moved from a 1 bedroom to a 2 bedroom apartment. The janitor couldn't believe it when we told him we wouldn't be needing his help at all. My brothers came in from Ky and Alabama just to do the move with my sister and I. We only have our parents with us once.

When kids were little and now for me, I have scissors I cut food up into to managable, can swallow whole if have to, pieces. Scissors can be tucked into purse, used pretty discretely, etc. Small plastic bag can be used to slip dirty scissors into.

It is sweet! Makes me wanna call my mom up and see if she's busy for lunch.

Doydie, if you have a Bob Evans, she might want to try the pork loin sandwich there. It's so tender you can cut it with a fork.
