Upset stomach from suppliments

Does anyone know out of these 4 supplements what might be causing me the following problem?

Quote:

I have a total of 4 supplements that might be causing me stomach problems. I either get really bad hurt burn for days or it goes straight through me. I'm wondering what one I should add back in first. Which one is the most important and or might not be the culprit. I'm taking them to help healing for peripheral neuropathy.

They are:
R-Lipic Acid 100mg (1 per day)
Acetyl L-Carnitine 400mg plus Alpha Lipoic Acid 200mg (3 per day)
Co Q-10 300mg (1 per day)
Members Mark Omega 3,6, 9 soft gel 1000mg of fish, flax, evening primrose and borage oils. (2 per day)
Any thoughts?

Thanks

I found for myself, that high dose borage/primrose oil increased my GI movements.

I thought you were taking fish oil? I'd drop that combo oil and get the plain fish one.

There is one poster on PN who claimed that r-lipoic acid upset her stomach. (it did nothing like that for me).

So you can try to avoid that one and see if you get improvement.

Basically you can drop all supplements for 2 weeks, and slowly add one back in at a time to see which one is the culprit.

I don't understand why you have a combo carnitine product while you are taking r-lipoic...that seems like a duplication to me.

You should be using a B12 supplement. Gluten problems cause inflammation of the GI tract anyway. There could be several malabsorption issues affecting you.
You could not be absorbing B complex properly. Without good levels of B6 you cannot metabolize the oils, or make stomach acid.

I think once you go gluten free, you will feel better all around.
The chronic gluten issues can be very draining.

What is wrong with the combo oil?

Here's what's in it BTW
Quote:

Fish oil 800mg
Flax oil 800mg
Blend primrose black currant oil and borage 400mg

(Omaga 3) 913mg's
ALA 473mg
EPA 264
DHA 176MG

(Omega 6) 433 mg's
GLA 213

(Omeaga 9) 213 mg's

Contains 440 mg of EPA and DHA.
I'm thinking it's the R-lipoic but I'm going to do the drop all for 2 weeks and add one back in at a time I guess.

I'm taking the combo carnitine product while I'm taking r-lipoic because the bottle of combo at walmart is much cheaper then anything I can order on the web so if it's not hurting that's what I'd like to do.

I'm taking 5mg of b-12. The ones I posted about are my suspects to my stomach issue.

Here's the rest of what I take. Maybe one of them is the culpret.

Benfotiamine 150mg a day. Was on double that for 2 weeks
Magnesium 200mg a day
B12 5mg a day
E400iu a day
Folic acid 1000mcg
D-3 4000iu a day

High dose primrose/borage/black currant can upset the stomach.
These provide GLA which affects the GI motility in some people.

A relative recently had the same problem.
He stopped his supplements for about a week and started back one at a time.
I think it was his multi vitamin that was bothering him (not sure though).
He also changed the timing of when he took his vitamins, deciding to take the majority of them at night seem to help.

That is interesting... many people have complained to me of multivits and also high dose B-complex of causing heartburn.
I think some tablets just don't dissolve quickly, and can reflux.
Also some people do not take enough liquid/water with their vitamins and supplements, so they don't dissolve well in the stomach.

My son actually threw up at school, with a zinc supplement. This is why I don't recommend the common zinc sulfate to anyone!
He also gets heartburn from B-complexes.

That's interesting pabb....I am the reverse. Coffee really makes me ill nowadays. (I used to drink a cup a day in the past). But tea has been kind to me! I have a big mug in the morning...English type, strong too.

You know, pabb, I knew an elderly woman who could not drink black tea either. It gave her a horrible headache. The polyphenols in it seemed to bother her alot. She lived to be 103!!

Also you might be sensitive to the tannins in tea...so make it weak to start. I always use a sweetener (Splenda, now) and milk.
That seems to make it easier on the stomach.

But the coffee thing. I used to enjoy coffee, and about 5 yrs ago something changed for me... and bingo...it is off my menu now!
Not just heartburn, but severe cramping and diarrhea too.
I've always been sensitive to it, and only did one cup or so a day.
I could never drink it like some people do!
