Insulin Resistance
 

My daughter is not diabetic but she does have Insulin Resistance. Her doctor did not put her on Metform because she has a sensitivity stomach instead she is on Fortamet.

The thing is when she started taking this medicine her sugar level went up higher. I thought this medicine would lower it, that is why we keep a watch on it.

Is it because she just started this medicine and her body have to adjust. Next week she starts taken two pills instead of one. Hope it don't raise it more.

Is this something that happens or if this is unusual?

Fortimet is metformin. It is a long acting version.

If blood sugars go way down, there will be a compensating factor from the liver, to raise them. So it depends on when you test the blood sugar and when the tablet is taken, and when it wears off. It might be normal or a little higher in the morning fasting, but the overall day levels, will be more normal.

Metformin does not change the movement of glucose into the cells but it does reduce liver gluconeogenesis...that is the liver making more glucose during fasting.

Metformin is a first line drug for insulin resistance. It also improves fertility in PCOS patients, and also reduces B12 levels.

Many people on it, lose some weight and may see lowered cholesterol levels as well.

She is being treated by her ob/gyn. She is the one that found out she has this PCOS and insulins resistance. She is thinking on founding a Endo. though. We are greatful for this doctor but she thought maybe it would be good for an Endo. to take care of the situation.

I think she checked her sugar two hour after eating and taking the pill. This is why she think maybe an endo near by her home can be more helpful.

It is good to know that this medicine can help her to be fertility.

Her Gyn. is on Fortimet. She said that it was easier on her stomach. It would be good if she can take metformin because it is a lot cheaper, but definitely concern about her sensitive stomach. This medicine seems to be working for her, so probably will be good to stay with it.

I took metformin extended release for over 6mos for insulin resistance a few years ago. I lost weight, and was doing well, overall. But the diarrhea came back with time, and then I developed a severe vertigo (neuropathy in my ear), which one doctor said was due to the metformin, so I had to stop it.
I just couldn't function with the severe dizziness, etc. I could barely walk.

Metformin is a tough drug, IMO...to tolerate. Some people do well on it, others like me, just bomb out on it.

But if symptoms reappear later, that would be a sign that metformin should be changed.

There is a supplement called d-chiro inositol which will improve fertility too. It is OTC and not covered by insurance. I am taking that now, instead. It does cost alot of money.... I see it has come down in price to $59/month. When I started it, it was $85 per month!

I do not recommend the other company online who makes this. They are slow in response, up to 3 weeks to get it, etc. Not as forthcoming for questions etc.
One thing the Chiral Balance is great for, is the facial hair that PCOS can cause. Mine is 90% gone now with this supplement.

MrsD, sorry you were not able to stay on it and had problems with it. My daughter was absolutely afraid to try this stuff, but then she realized she needed to do something. This week she starts two pills instead of one. Hope she continues to do well.

The bad thing is that you never know what medicine will work and will not work until you try it. She was afraid that it would make her sick during work, but so far, it has been good.
