My heart goes out to the family of the 7-year-old girl from northern Florida found murdered. The horror and grief is unimaginable.

I hesitate to post this and open up a can of worms, but I was just reading about this tragedy, and can't seem to shake the concept of 161 registered sex offenders living within a 5 mile radius of this little girl. 161!!

Now I know this is a highly populated area, so am taking per capita into consideration, and realizing that some offenders could be on the books from having had a 16 year old girlfriend as a 19 year old, and so on.

And I also realize that everyone has to live somewhere. I'm certainly not suggesting offenders be put in "leper colonies" or something. But...good heavens.

My dh told me about this last night when he called. Absolutely horrible. There are some really sick people in the world, and yep, a lot in that area. But then, that's the 4th most populous state. And being warm attracts a lot of people - you can't be poor or homeless as easy where you freeze to death.

I will say this about Florida though, from watching the news even one month there, those cops are on it. They have crime, but they catch the criminals. Up here in OH, they have 10 times more unsolved cases, and it's not like it's because there is less evidence.

You might do the crime down there, but you are gonna get busted, and soon, and you're going to pay. And that is IF you live past the homeowner shooting your butt.

P.S.

I'm not for leper colonies either. Public stonings, sure.

I saw it on TV last night.....her poor mother was just devastated. I can't imagine anything more horrible to have to endure.

We had a local news story here about sex offenders living in "tent cities" in some woods.....until the state discovered that they were camping on state owned property and gave them 24 hours to move.

They wanted to know where they should go. Can't be within a certain number of feet of a day care center, school, church, subdivision without being in violation.

Well, should have thought about that before you decided to break the law. I have no sympathy for these people. Go out into the middle of nowhere and pitch a tent. Punishment isn't meant to be pleasant or convenient.

Gives me an idea - a preschool, school, daycare and church on every corner!

:)

Let em all go live on a garbage barge out in the bloody ocean for all I care. Then they can assault and kill one another.

Seriously, people steal cars or sell pot. No big deal. They're stupid, break laws. They get caught and pay for it, and maybe they can come away from prison and behave.

But I see no redeeming quality in someone who can injure a child like that. None. This is not a car accident, they did THE most horrific thing ON PURPOSE. And now that we have stuff like DNA, we know who did it beyond any doubt. When it's a case like that, when we are SURE, I see NO point in allowing a monster like that to live.

These people should never have the opportunity to do this again. and if they are alive, they get out and repeat. That's why we have Amber Alerts.

It's called "evil"

Erin524 10-22-2009 07:11 PM

I'm all for public hangings in the town square for anyone who hurts a child like that. I dont think it matters if they just rape the kid and let them live, or if they kill the child while doing whatever it is that they're doing, I think the punishment for anyone who gets sexual gratification from hurting or raping a kid should be death...

and the sentence needs to be immediately carried out upon getting the guilty verdict...none of that sitting on death row crap for the next 25 years while appealing.

They found the girl's body by following the garbage trucks from the neighborhood where she was last seen in Florida to the landfill in Georgia. So, hopefully whoever killed her threw out some mail with their name and address on it and that it'll be found right next to where her body was found. That would at least give them a suspect.

People are sick...and I dont think this is a new thing, we just hear about it more nowadays, since we know a lot more about the psychology of these types of people.

braingonebad 10-22-2009 07:24 PM

Exactly. It's not like that little girl got 25 years to appeal. And spent 50 million dollars of tax payer money, doing so.

Ugh. I think that's the worst part of it, really. Bad enough what he did .... then put her in the garbage? Really? WHO is the garbage?!?!

Hangings, stonings... I'd pay for a shot at pulling the lever or chucking a rock. and yes, in this case, I feel like I could *throw the first stone*. I'm no angel but ya know.

Seeing this story really broke my heart. I mean I have been glued to the news channel and my heart breaks for this family and I grieve along with them. This was a story that hit very close to home for someone like me. Especially now that I am a mother.

And I am stuck in this battle inside of my head of being angry and trying to find the solution...Here is the problem. After seeing this story it reminded me I haven't checked out my own neighbors in a while. Upon pulling up the local sex offender registry of people who live/ work in my area, we have 167 within a 10-15 mile radius.

I started looking at these pictures and the charges, etc. And I made a rather disturbing discovery. The two gentlemen who knocked on my door twice this summer trying to get me to sign on with their company for lawn care... Both convicted of child molestation in 1996, One was then convicted in 2002 for Rape and the other was convicted in 2006 for sodomy and aggrivated sexual assault. and these scumbags are running around my neighborhood where my child and her friends play. And there are no laws to stop them from going door to door in my neighborhood.

This story has more twists. There are 5 people on that list who are registered as being homeless living in a tent (and they give an approx location). Are you kidding me? These creeps are living in the woods around my house, behind my grocery store, this is scary! And then I started looking at each file again, and realized that more than 50% of the convicted sex offenders are unemployed. I get that it is hard to find a job when you have to put child molester on the application... but please tell me that I ma not being denied for disabilty while my taxes go to feed and provide housing for child molesters and rapists!

And yes, I do know there are cases where people are wrongly accused and convicted and no I am not a start a riot kind of person but this really bugs me!!
