any trouble w/pediasure???

sorry for posting with so many questions, but besides my dr.s, this is the only place i can come to for another opinion. And in some cases, I feel like some of you guys have been there done that. And my questions have built up in the last few months with no braintalk! So anyway.....
I remember talk of some kids here being on pediasure. Paige was mixing it half and half w/ formula. No probs. We started giving it to her full strength, and now she gags after a couple of swallows, sometimes throwing it up. We thouhgt it was some new meds she was on, so after a week of being off them, she was still doing it. She hasn't been a gagger in a long time. I also tried mixing it with water, milk, etc..... could she be allergic to something in it?? Anybody have trouble getting there kids to take pediasure? But she readily accepts it like shes starving (its really the only way she is feeding, she wont "chew" food. Anyway, glad again that your all back.

Maybe its the flavor? Have you tried any other flavor besides vanilla? I have tasted it in the past and I have to agree. NASTY stuff. I would be gagging too. I hope you find the answer you are looking for and that she starts keeping it down better. The only time we gag with it is when Amanda is constipated and full. Then she starts gagging. But she is tube fed and has a nissan. So she really can't get much up anymore.

My Megs drinks pediasure daily.....I always add a little strawberry or chocolate syrup to hers, kind of makes it taste better. Megs loves it, but.....I think it is horrid tasting would make me gag too......Also you may try adding some carnation instant breakfast to it, that gives it a nicer flavor too....Good luck deary

Zoe threw up and had nasty diahreah. The culprit was dairy in the pediasure.

i wondered about the dairy, too. Would she have had a problem with formula if it was a dairy prob?

I have no Pediasure experience. Eating-wise, Tom was fairly normal. He was breastfed until 4 months, then we switched to formula. We began adding solids at 6 months. By 12 months, he was completely off formula and drinking milk. At 15 months, he had his "first" seizure, and that was triggered by yogurt. I used to believe that yogurt triggered seizures in Tom. I have since changed my mind that it is not the yogurt so much as the increase in total dairy consumed. Days that he ate yogurt, he had more dairy.... enough to tip the scales and have a seizure.

Just looking at the web, I can't find ingredients listing for Enfamil with Iron, which is the formula I used for Tom. But, it does say (http://www.enfamil.com/products/formulas/i_1_3.html) that the ratio of whey to casein in the formula is 60:40 (which means more whey than casein) "just like breastmilk." Whereas the Pediasure vanilla (http://www.pediasure.com/App_Pages/pedia_info.aspx - click on the "vanilla" icon) lists "milk protein concentrate" ahead of "whey protein concentrate." I'm assuming the "milk protein concentrate" is some concentrated form of casein, because I always think of casein as the protein in milk.

Anyway, all this is to say, it looks like this change has increased the casein (milk protein) in Paige's diet. A lot of kids have problems with casein. I've never bothered to try and figure out if Tom has a problem with casein (versus lactose or whey). We just avoid all dairy. I'm really starting to believe neurologically impaired kids should avoid dairy, but I'm kind of nutty that way. Do they make a dairy-free Pediasure? (It doesn't look like it, but I thought I'd ask.)

So... to answer that last question, I think she could have been okay with the formula and have problems now with Pediasure if it's a dairy problem. That fits with our experience with Tom and dairy and the allergy bucket theory. You can only handle so much. Once the bucket is filled, things are going to happen (seizures, vomitting, whatever you're susceptible to).

Hope that makes sense. (Hope you don't think I'm a nut.:o )

Spencer had piles and piles of vomiting his first year of life. What did he do? "Cough, cough, cough - vomit" It appeared he was gagging. We wondered if it was baby hymlich (sp?)

There were several theories.

1. Milk protein allergy
2. Encephalitis from vaccine
3. Abdominal migraine (wrong pattern)
4. Abdominal tumor (CT Scan ruled out)
5. Aspiration (swallow study ruled out)

In Spencer's case, it was most likely some combination of the 1st and 2nd items.

I changed Spencer's formula and within a couple of weeks the vomiting started to subside.

We tried a milk trial the SAME weekend he contracted and was hospitalized with Rotovirus. Talk about lousy stinkin' luck! :p

The GI asked the next time we do a milk trial on Spencer that we do it through his office.

We haven't tried since. We just avoide milk. It isn't that painful since Trevor and I are also off milk so it actually makes it easy since the pantry is set up that way.

Since Spencer was barely a year at the time, I tried several of the "allergen" pre-digested whey formula products. He either hated them or he chucked on them.

So, we ended up with a Soy formula.

Good luck. The chucks are just NO FUN!

Beck,

What exactly do you mean by milk trial?

Also, Silk Soy Milk is Gluten free. Whole Foods (atleast the one in Marietta GA) sells gluten free infant cereal and they sell gluten free strawberry flavored syrup. I use 8 oz of the Silk Very Vanilla Enhanced Soy Milk with 1/8 cup of the gluten free infant cereal and a tablespoon of the gluten free strawberry syrup for Zoe as her pediasure replacement. We have had no more nasty, stinky diapers and vomiting since doing that.

RathyKay, that actually makes since!! So if that is her main source of diet, I was wondering what else to give her. I am going to try what Kamie gives her daughter. Kamie, can you message me and tell me where this place is so i can try it. Im up in Cartersville, I know Marietta well. Thanks!!
