H1N1 Question
My kids got the nasal mist. But I've also heard there are two kinds of shot....is this right???? If so, which one is best for ms patients. I know they mentioned to my daughter that one of them had mercury.
Any idea? I am supposed to get one Monday. Thanks. |
My aunt has been giving the vaccinations to people at the hospital she works at. She said the single dose injections (pre-filled syringes) are the ones that have been purified to remove the thimerosol, the multidose vials (bottle of vaccine that you use to fill syringes as needed) are the ones with thimerosol.
The flu mist is the one they have you snort up your nose. You're probably wanting one from the pre-filled single dose injection. The flumist is the one you DO NOT want to take because it's live virus. |
as far as i know there's only 1 shot. you may be thinking of the regular flu shot and the H1N1. there are 2 separate shots.
DO NOT take the nasal mist. that has live virus and can make MSers very sick. only take the shot, which is a weakened virus. that's what is suggested. you're lucky. we don't have supplies in CO yet. i've called around and can't get it. |
When we went for the H1N1 shot, they did not have any without mercury. My DD and I both got the shot - and the next week a lot of her friends ended up with 104 temperatures and 1/5 of the school was out sick. My DD had a simple cold. I am glad we got the shots but that mercury does make me a bit nervous. I listen to the arguments about it but also heard it has the same amount of mercury as a can of tuna fish. Because they only had that one shot, I had to make a judgment call right then and there.

Thank you for the responses. They were VERY helpful. I think I understand what is going on now and what my choices are. I will try again to reach my neuro's office and verify that I should get the shot. The nurse at the clinic wanted me to make sure before she gave it to me, which I appreciated.
Thanks again ALL of you. |
That is misinformation. The injectable swine flu shot is not weakened flu, it is killed flu. The flumist, though, is indeed live flu but it is attenuated (weakened).

I got my H1N1 shot this morning, had to drive 20 minutes each way and wait in line about 43 minutes.
By the time I got out the lines had thinned. I feel fine, btw. ;) |
My city (Omaha, NE) just announced that they're having an H1N1 vaccine clinic (free shots!) for anyone who wants one at the auditorium (Civic Auditorium) downtown...till 3pm. No age restrictions now. (the age restriction, anyone over 65, has been bugging me...)
My dad wants my mom to get a shot, so when I told him they're giving them out for free right now at the auditorium, he said he'd rather pay for the shot and not have to stand in line. (he's got a bad back, and a heart condition and doesnt want to stand in line...mom has bad knees and spinal stenosis, but she has a wheelchair we could take for her to sit in) I dont want to go stand in line either. I called the pharmacy I go to, and they said they would be getting 24hr advance notice before they'd be giving out shots and that no pharmacy in Omaha has the vaccine right now. I'm guessing the fact that the county is handing out shots to anyone right now might mean that the doctor's offices and the pharmacies might be getting the vaccine soon. My dad is going to ask at work if he can get my mom a vaccine at the vaccine clinic at his work. (he works at one of the hospitals in town). I'm not getting the vaccine myself. I'm just trying to stay away from crowds and small children. (not a problem for me...I dont care much for small children or crowds) I just want to get my mom a shot. |
