Does MS cause kidney stones?
 

Why not? I already hava MS induced menopause, MS related issues from getting my tubes tied....

So my doc appt today was interesting. Gained 13 pounds in 2 weeks, 3 inches in my abdomen and a slew of other symptoms. And I finally headed in to my doc who finds glucose and protien in my urine. And he sent me in for ultrasounds (yes, plural!) and they are checking for kidney stones.

Does it ever flippin end with this dang disease??

And they found........... NOTHING! the doc has NO IDEA what is wrong with me but he decided the best course of action was to write me an antibiotic and a pain reliever and send me to the neuro... Called neuro, talked to the nurse explained the situation, she says NO that is not normal and no it's not from the MS drugs and that I need further testing... waiting on them to get the results from the other doc.

Proof that doctors are clueless. If it is an infection I would like to fix it before I start TY which my insurance has finally approved. But if it is something with my kidneys i may want to hold off on TY until we figure it out.....

I swear to you 2 years ago the only health problems I had was the twice a year attack of strep throat!I feel like the more they try to treat this disease the sicker I get.

Sorry leggs, what a mess they put you in. Did they check you for diabetes with a 4 to 5 hour glucose tolerance test? I am glad you don't have kidney stones but they should culture the urine not just dip test it.

Those tiny critter bugs can hide out unless cultured.
Are you retaining fluid? You said you gained weight and your belly is swollen. I think they need to figure out the problem before they give you any more meds. Do you have pain in the bladder, kidney or stomach area?

Stop picking up more problems okay?- MS is enough. I hope you feel better soon and they find out what is the problem. :hug:

The first time I had x rays (30 yrs ago), no stones showed up. It had most likely passed by the time the x rays were taken, but I still had the infection. (From the type of pain I had, the doc thought it was my appendix, so it's kind of a good thing the infection pointed to the correct problem).


It was years later when they finally saw a stone on film (early '90's). I had issues with that thing for years - 2 rounds of litho, and it reformed both times. I can't tell you how much keflex I've eaten, and other antibiotics.

And the thing is STILL in there! I can feel it, but have not had too much trouble with it lately.

There was a lot of confusing info on the topic back then - eat calcium? Avoid it? All I know is, I do NOT drink our tap water because if it plugs up at faucets, it's gotta be plugging me up too, lol. I can NOT drink anything with sugar, because that causes infections for me. And if I need an A/B for any reason, I have to eat yogurt to keep up my good bacteria.


Keep tabs on this thing, okay? Hopefully, it's a one time thing for you.

I am indeed retaining water the only thing they did find on all of the tests is that my bladder doesn't empty fully. The first doc says it would look like a kidney infection except I was neg. for white blood cells. I thought maybe the Avonex I came off of a few weeks ago may have caused the lack of white blood cells but he says no, blood work claims they are normal. The funny part is after spending all day between his office and the hospital, his final conclusion was that there is nothing wrong with me. Follow up with your neuro he says...as he is writing the prescription for the antibiotic and another for vicoden... If there is nothing wrong with me why are you treating me?

He also seems to think the stuff in my urine may be from simple blood leakage... Why am I the only one concerned that there may be blood leaking into my urine??

I really feel like this is another tubal issue. The swelling, the weight gain, the constipation, the cramping... is all issues I had after getting my tubes tied. BUT, all of my ultra sounds are normal. UGH!

I am kind of to the point that if something else is wrong with my body that I don't even want to know.

Leggs maybe BGB is right. You might have HAD a stone in the kidney and it passed. Sometimes when it passes (more painful for men) it scratches the bladder on it's way out.

I passed a few small ones years ago, I heard the cha-chink hit the china bowl a few times. My doctor put me on anti-b's to prevent the scratched bladder from getting infected.

That causes pain, and the blood in the urine could be from the stone passing out of the bladder. As for the glucose in the urine, I don't know anything about that unless your sugar is high.

I was trying to think of what else it could be. I guess the meds will help, limit your salt and drink lots of water.

Salt follows water out the bladder. People drink less fluids when they retain, and that only concentrates the urine more. If you received different orders from the doctor or Neuro than ignore my thoughts on this. Take some yogurt, it has potassium and puts back the GOOD bacteria the anti-b's kill off. JMO

There may be something to that, something that the ultra sound is not picking up yet. Adhesions?

If not stones or complications from the tubal, my only other guess would be intestinal.

Lady - I never heard or saw any stones I passed. After the litho, they had me screen my urine to see if any of the broken stone came out. There was what I'd call grit in the screen for a few days after each litho. Like several grains of sand.

The uro pointed some of the larger bits out and said they about typical stone size. Also said because it was a crushed stone, it probably didn't hurt as much as it normally would. It was by no means comfortable though, I can tell you that.

These can include increased hydration, medication for treating infection and reducing pain, and diuretics to encourage urine flow and prevent further stone formation. I have MS and a history of many strep throats. Do you think there is a connection?
