Question for Mrs D
Hi there. I have not posted here for a long time. I logged on the other day and saw a post from Mrs d saying that anti seizure drugs can cause a depletion of folic acid and calcium. I have been on Pregabalin (Lyrica) for about 2 and half years now. I have very painful hips and I am wondering if this could be a result of taking the Pregabalin. My question is where did you find out about the link between these meds and folic acid/calcium depletion as I would like to research into this and don’t know where to start.
Thanks so much Lupin |
The link between anticonvulsants and nutrients, and especially
osteoporosis has been in the literature for a long time. Most doctors know this, but some do not. When NEW anticonvulsants come out, some doctors follow the same guidelines. Gabapentin and Lyrica have not made it to the studies list about nutrients. It takes many years for the effects to show up. So it is an assumption at this time that either of these may have similar results. Supplying calcium and Vit D is standard practice now. However, the folic acid issue is less clear, since increasing folate may cause seizures to come back in some especially with Dilantin. http://www.epilepsy.com/info/women_folicacid You can get a Vit D test at the doctor's. However, the treatments offered are still very crude..as doctors do not keep up with the research. I have a Vit D video thread on Vitamin forum: http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/thread92116.html http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/thread108276.html |
Thanks
