Where am I going to get the energy?
 

I've got a construction project planned for December 2nd in my room. I'm having a desk and bookcase built into my wall. I have furniture that I have to move, and even tho I made the attempt to clean things up, it feels like I wont be able to get the room ready for the contractor.

I had two computer cabinets. I got one moved today. (I didnt move it!) I got my boyfriend and one of his roommates to come over and they wrestled it out of my room and got it upstairs for my dad to use.

My other desk is still in here, and wasnt ready for moving. Boyfriend wont be able to come over to move it either. He's working every day pretty much till after Xmas.

I hurt myself a week or two ago lifting something, and did some damage to my neck and am in some pain. I can barely do the cleaning that I need to do.

The new desk will be ready to be built on December 2nd. I have to get an electrician to move the outlets and prepare my wall above the desk for the flat screen tv I got for Xmas last year to be hung on the wall. I dont think I have time to get that done. Seeing as how I still have to get the other desk out of the way, along with my tv stand.

It wore me out this afternoon helping clean things up so that boyfriend could move the desk for me. (ok, I went shopping at Cabela's for 3hrs before the desk move, so my bad there) And boyfriend was pretty disgusted by the 5 or 6yrs of dust that had accumulated in and on that cabinet desk. At least the other desk isnt as bad. I was creeped out by all the dust too...it was all the same color as my dog that died 3yrs ago. I think most of it was dog hair.

There's still a dust bunny inside the cabinet desk we moved today that's the size of a small puppy, at least I'm hoping it was a dust bunny. If it's anything that used to actually be alive, I'm going to freak.

I'm just amazed at all the accumulated junk that I had to clean out of both my cabinet desks. It was like an archaelogical expedition. I'm exhausted now!

I'm tempted to just get a nice big sledgehammer to turn the 2nd desk into small pieces of particle board to get it out of the room. (I'd have to have someone else smash it for me tho)

At least now with the one desk out, I can kind of imagine what the built-in is going to look like in that space, and I'm realizing that I'll have a ton more space in my room to move around...and real practical storage. (cant wait for that bookcase!)

I just dont know where I'm going to get the energy to get the rest of my stuff moved. (also have to move a storage cabinet, because we're having a linen cabinet built in down here too.) I already injured myself in the early stages of cleaning, and that's not showing signs of healing anytime soon, and I think the injury set off another MS flare. (my right arm is starting to go numb, altho not as bad as my left hand and arm are right now)

Anyone else think that maybe I should schedule the construction for AFTER Christmastime??

Yes, with the unemployment situation, there must be a "hire a hunk" available somewhere near you. Do you get the local paper? Is there a "handyman" service listed?

try listing something on craigslist looking for someone to clear out the room

I'd be afraid to hire someone off of Craigslist. They'd clear my room alright!

I'm almost wondering if when the electrician gets here, if I offer him some cash to move the desk for me...at least get it out of the room. Either that or see if the boyfriend can come over earlier in the day before he works (offer him money too...he's really short this month on that) maybe he could help me get that desk out too.

Either that, or I'll get an Allen wrench and see if I can get the desk out, one piece at a time. Too bad my cousin that put the desk together for me no longer talks to us. I'd offer the desk to him, or try to get him to come over and move it for me. But...there's been a bit of falling out. (his wife is a whacko-has-more-than-just-A-screw-loose person.)

I could offer the desk to a neighbor...on the condition that they come get it. Too bad my sister and brother-in-law havent moved here yet. I'd give them the desk.

If I can just get it out of the room, we can store it in my dad's office till we can get it out of the house.

Ooo! I can go get some of those slider disk thingies to put underneath and see if I can slide it out! Maybe we can do that? I'll have to see if Walgreens still sells those...or Wally World (Walmart) Time for a trip to WalMart's Gadget aisle!

Last week in the middle of the heat I realised that only one of our sofas got any of the air con so I wanted to move the furniture around. I knew Himself would just do it in a rush so I waited for him to go out and got my old glide sheet from my community nursing days out and put the furniture on the glide sheet and dragged it all around.
room looks and feels much better and I have a reading and music corner which is nice. and I managed to tidy up and clear out at the same time.

I recommend a glide sheet. or asking a friend to help. or a neighbour ? surely someone could help you?

I used those slider things, which are NO miracle, but they wprk okay. I moved 6 dressers and my HUGE heavy bed am I'm pretty shrimpy, so I'm sure you could handle the desk.

I got an 8 pk at Menard's - $5.

A tip - slide slow, push low. Real heavy stuff actually stays on them easier than lighter things. Things with sharp, square *feet*(feet that are not like feet lol) stays on better than stuff with nice decorative round feet, like table legs.

Trust me, I'm almost 50 and in no shape to move this stuff. But when nobody will come to the rescue and it HAS to be moved, well, necessity is the mother of ...um ....something.

The electrician just called. I think I'm going to have to go get those sliders. The electrician will be here after 3pm. Maybe I can just get the remaining desk pulled away from the wall. Which means I might have to move my iMac. I wonder if I can lift that? (my neck still really hurts!)

My room looks weird to me without one of the big boxy desks in here. Feels so much bigger in here without it. If I hadnt had those big boxes in here, I could have had a dresser and my little couch and my great-uncle's chair in here all this time.

I've got a little over 7feet of space between my bed and the empty space on the wall. Once I get my built-in desk there, I'll have 6 feet of space between the bed and desk. (with the big boxy desks, I think there was really only about four feet or a little over that between the bed and desks. There was a lot of airspace between the desks and the wall)

I just cant wait to gain the extra storage, and I'm glad that I wont ever have to move the new desk.

Hopefully I'll be able to control all the dust easier. My throat is sore this morning because of all the dust that got kicked up (and dumped on my head when the boyfriend was wiping my old box desk down) The desk is going to be antique white wood, with a darker, not-quite-black Corian countertop. I'll at least be able to see the dust. The cleaning lady will be allowed to dust this desk, because I'm keeping it much much tidy-er than my big wood/particleboard box desks. (I'll have a couple of drawers and cabinets with doors to stash my junk inside of)

I've been taking in-progress pictures (basically before and after pictures) of my room, so maybe I'll post pictures of the new desk when it's finished.

I just cleaned off my desk, except for my iMac. I dont have the energy to do anything else now. (I had 50, very dusty Beanie Babies on top of the big box)

I dont have the slider thingies, (walgreens didnt have them, and there's no time for anywhere else)

The electrician is going to be here in a half hour. He's coming to do an estimate, so it's not like he's going to be ripping wires out of the wall or anything today.

I just have to remember everything...moving the outlets, moving the doorbell ringer from outside my room to inside my room. (there's already a spot pre-wired for that actually. when we had the house built, they pre-wired a bunch of stuff) have to move one lightswitch, or at least disable it since there will be a linen closet on top of it. And we might need to add a circuit or two.

I want to make sure that I wont be overloading any fuses or outlets when the desk is built. I've got five computers (imac, one desktop XP 'puter, and 3 laptops) plus the tv, cable box, and tivo that I'm going to have plugged in. Plus a lamp. (ok, might not keep all the computers on the desk...might be selling one)

I already dont trust the outlets in my room...so I just want to make sure everything is going to be safe. hopefully all the wiring wont cost too much.

Ask the electrician how much is too much for the circuit. Thing is, all your outlets are on the same one, most likely. Most rooms are like that, in fact, there are usually a few rooms of outlets plus a few other rooms worth of lights on one circuit.

They don't generally put the lights AND outlets from one room on the same for a good reason - if you trip a breaker or blow a fuse, you still either have the ceiling light or can plug in a lamp.

If your room is the only one with outlets on the circuit, you should be okay - you are in the basement, right? So you might have that wire all to yourself.

If not, you might have room in the fuse box to set it up like that. Even so, be sure not to overload it. People think if it's 110, it's always going to carry that full load, but not so. My house is old, and my wires crazy. We have had bulbs explode, due to too high voltage. I never took a meter to it, but it had to be pretty high to toast the bulbs right out of their sockets. I mean they went flying.

You'll also get problems if you overload and nothing is getting enough juice. And your wires are getting hot, too.

Breakers and fuses don't always go off at the first sign of trouble and you might damage the electronics before you know you have trouble.

If you've never been through a major remodel, this will be intense. But keep your eyes on the prize. Hopefully it'll make your life easier when it's done.
