Looking for a neuro that knows about celiac
 

Hello,

I have had an undiagnosed gluten problem for years and I think it has started to affect my brain and nervous system recently.

The more I research I am pretty concerned about my situation. It seems like sometimes your immune system instead of reacting to the gluten, can actually mistake the gluten, attacking various tissues in the brain and cause a problem. Not sure if its happening in my case, but I need to check it out asap.

I live in Florida and currently looking for a neurologist who knows about gluten and the brain, and hopefully a good neurologist in general, etc.
I am also willing to travel a little ways somewhere in the Southeast. I am waiting to get into Mayo in Jacksonville, and Shands at Florida, but that could take a few months.

If you could recommend someone or point me in the right direction, I would be very grateful. Thank you.

I don't know my Florida geography, but I think Dr. Perlmutter, The Renegade Neurologist, practices in Florida.

If you back track to his blog, and search gluten... you will find he is most definitely aware. One of the "most" aware... possibly more aware than the folk at Mayo... who may still be more concerned with celiac disease... and gluten sensitivity can most definitely cause neurological disease without necessarily testing positive for celiac disease (as defined by biopsy evidence of intestinal villi damage). May be worth the drive to see Dr. Perlmutter, if he is within a day's trip. Or perhaps, his center could recommend other doctors in your area who are enlightened.
