My clothes don't like me

I don't know what it is the last few weeks (months?) but nothing I wear feels right. I don't mean nothing fits, as in too big (ha) or small, but nothing is comfortable.

I hate all my shoes, my socks are either too tight, too loose, too thin, too thick, too something. I'm always yanking or tugging on something, or changing to a different pair of pants or shirt. Even my underclothes feel weird, like I'm wearing somebody else's clothes.

I HATE it! It's driving me crazy. I can't afford to keep buying a bunch of clothes just to find out they're not "right" either. I don't THINK it's psychological; I think it's because all of the MS and other medical type issues I have going on. But then, maybe it IS psychological. Maybe it's some kind of claustrophobic thing, who knows?

The only time I'm really comfortable is in my nightgown, and then not very. I am so pathetic.

Sounds like someone is showing up to thanksgiving dinner naked!

I know the feeling. I had about 2 months where I could not stand anything touching me including clothes. which is why I spent the majority of that time in my old man pj's.

I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE???

My clothes don't like me, either, B2Y. They conspire against me and shrink......then giggle behind my back (I've heard them) as I struggle to get into them.

Since it's getting dark at 5:30 PM now I love it........an excuse to get into my nightgown before supper!!

I'm all about comfort now. Gone are the days of fashionable strappy sandals and heels. I still have most of them.......can't seem to force myself to get rid of them all.....but I don't wear them. One of these days I'll donate them to someone who'll get some good use from them.

My favorite thing to wear now is sweats. Stretchy sweat pants and soft sweatshirts. And soft terry socks. Nobody sees me but me...and the cats....and so far nobody has complained.

BTW....I hope you can find something comfortable to wear.

You are not alone!!! Any touch is less comfortable (clothes are much less comfortable). It's neurological. I can feel fallen hairs on my arm, yet I can't walk or use one arm. It's like the muscles won't work but nerve sensors over-do!!! Autistic children (very neurological) get very upset at labels, etc. I found my self cutting out labels for me.

I also find myself cutting out labels. I have only three pairs of shoes that I can tolerate. I ordered two more pairs in the style that I like, and wouldn't you know it, they are uncomfortable. The manufacturer changed them slightly. And bras are the worst! Although I am also uncomfortable if I do not wear one:rolleyes:.

Count me in the club! Around the house, I wear cotton pj pants and t-shirts (men's white t-shirts that you buy in pack of 5). If I have to go anywhere it sometimes can be exhausting and frustrating getting dressed. On those bad sensory days, my bed can look like a big heap of laundry as I have tried on all sorts of pants, shirts, socks, etc. You get the picture. :p

I used to wear pj shorts and tank tops to bed. I can't do that anymore. The feeling of the skin to skin contact on my legs drives me crazy and the touch of the sheets on my arms does the same. Now I wear the cotton (smooth - can't have any texture to it) pj pants and the men's t-shirts to bed.

And bras . . .don't get me started. With the constant hug, which acts up to varying degrees everyday, I hate wearing them but need to as I am getting older and things are going south.:D Several months ago I bought new bras that were comfortable at the time. Recently, they are anything but. Target had some Hanes ones on sale for $2.50! I tried them on and I'll be danged if they are the most comfortable bras I have ever wore. I bought 2 of them. Hey for $5.00 you can't go wrong. I cleaned out my closet and dresser the other day and seriously I had over 10 bras in my drawer. All because they feel better at different times. Heck, I have more bras than pants/jeans. LOL

I am the same way with shoes. Nothing confining or tight. That basically means flip flops all the time.

B2Y - You are so not alone on this one and I agree with whoever stated it was neurological. It is a sensory thing. When I filled out my SSDI paperwork I put in there that there are many times that all of sudden my clothes are so irritating that I need to take them off, immediately.:D

I don't know whether to laugh or weep as I read these responses. I'm sitting here nodding my head! I'm going to try to make a composite of some of the posts to use as a reference sheet for those who don't get it (which is most people)

I've tried to describe it to my daughter who SO wants to understand, but I hear myself saying, "No, it doesn't really hurt. No, it doesn't really 'bind'. No, it doesn't scratch or chafe or any of those things. It's just a sensation that I can barely tolerate some days." And when I focus on it (I try not to), I can't breathe. Grrrrr.

I couldnt wear my usual bra earlier this fall because of the numbness that I had on the left side. I went out and bought a sport bra, and that was great for about a month or two...then I couldnt wear it anymore.

I'm able to wear my regular bra again now, I'm guessing because I'm numb on both sides now... :( But, I have to wear it so loose that it's not all that effective in doing what it's designed to do.

About the only shirts that I can stand to wear lately are men's t-shirts, but I've been wearing men's t-shirts fairly exclusively even before I knew I had MS. (they're cut better than women's, and they're cheaper than women's t-shirts.)

I tend to wear my clothes a little larger than I need. So, most of my t-shirts right now are 4X's. I'm swimming in them, but at least I'm comfy.

I had to buy mommy jeans (not pregnant jeans, but jeans that some women wear once they hit their 40's. A friend of mine, who happens to be a mom, told me that they're called mommy jeans) I havent been able to wear regular jeans since before I got diagnosed with MS. Something about the way they were cut, or maybe the zippers and buttons had something to do with it, but the fabric of my old jeans made my skin crawl.

The mommy jeans have denim that is so much softer, and actually feels like it wears better. I get mine at Kmart. They dont seem to wear out at the ankles like my old Levi jeans used to after a few months of wearing them.

I've noticed that I seem to prefer cotton clothes now. I used to love to wear velvet tops in the winter, but now I cant stand having polyester anywhere near my skin. If I do wear one of my velvet tops, I have to have a t-shirt (longsleeve T's if the top is a longsleeve) on underneath the top.

I dont wear sweaters anymore unless they're a cardigan, but they cant be wool. I can wear acrylic sweaters tho. I love sweater vests, so I've got a nice collection of those now. I'm hoping to be able to knit my own vests someday. (I've already crocheted myself a couple. Only one turned out nice enough that I'll wear it in public) If my hands both end up staying numb, I probably wont be crocheting or knitting much longer tho.:mad::mad::(:(

I love terrycloth socks! I've always loved terrycloth socks, but now they're the best thing to wear. I especially love the feel of brand new terrycloth socks. I have more socks than I have of any other type of clothing. The socks get tossed as soon as they get a hole in them tho. Feet are sensitive and when the socks get holes, they're never comfy anymore. Even if the hole is in an area where holes in socks never used to bug me before.
