A Book that has Really Helped us........

The Maker's Diet by Jordan S. Rubin

The book documents the remarkable story of Jordan Rubin's struggle with and victory over severe Crohn's Disease, however it also has a wealth of information, diet plans and recipes for general nutritional health and healing.

A friend of mine has been utelising many of the suggestions in the book and has just had a year without allergy problems which have plagued him for most of his life!

We have implemented much of Dr Rubin's recommendations into my son's treatment protocol for Crohn's Disease and are seeing very positive results. :)

sorry Cara...I missed your post yesterday somehow..........

well, the essence of the book is that we should be eating more of the good healthy stuff the way God created and intended for it to be used.

The actual initial 40 day plan is divided into 3 two week phases, where foods are eliminated and rotated. This phased system is designed to "attack the three i's"... to balance insulin and reduce infection and inflammation.

the plan has a basic, intermediate and advanced level for people to choose just how they want to follow it, based on their own lifestyle choices and health status........the more advanced levels being most recommended for those with chronic conditions.

The wealth of background information on the foods and the yummy recipes appealed to me as a mom trying to take care of a sick child, while the citing of research, epidemiological studies etc appealed to my scientific side, and it has been inspiring for me to also comprehend the spiritual aspect of the food sources that God created for our nourishment and health preservation'

Also, it is so encouraging to see our whole family benefit from the dietary changes we have implemented in order to help my son.

so there's a bit more on The Maker's Diet :)

I'll have to look into this! I have some digestion problems as a result of scarring from radiation treatment. There may be something here that would help. Plus 2 of my grandkids are ADHD. May be something in there that would help them.
Hugs, Lois

Thanks for the information! I have Crohn's. I went on the SouthBeach diet a ccouple of years ago and in addition to losing 70 pounds I also was about to stop taking the 16 pills a day I was taking for Crohn's. So I am positive that diet plays a major role in this illness.

I am definately interested in reading this book.

It looks very interesting. I have had Ulcerative Colitis for 30+ years and it currently is in remission. I had a cousin, many many years ago who suffered with Crohns. Unfortunately, she was stubborn when it was flaring really bad and wouldn't go into the hospital until after the holidays. She ended up with systemic infection and they couldn't save her.

We have so much new information all the time about these diseases. After a talk with my masseuse today (a registered nurse as well), I'm convinced my Ulcerative Colitis and the severe damage from the major flares, has contributed to my overall pain with fibro, etc.

Some of the things she encouraged me to do was to cut wheat, dairy and sugar from my diet and to start getting acidopholus+enzymes into my system to try and help the digestion and help repair all of the damage and scarring.

This book looks very good. Thanks for the info.

Hi Doody :)

yes, taking probiotics is really a good thing...not just for those with IBDs but for all of us

re the ulcerative colitis, I really would recommend that you consider taking DGL Liquorice supplement! Even the medical profession is finally taking a closer look at the amaxing healing properties of liquorice root to the digestive lining.........it is important tho that it be DGL Liquorice = deglycyrrhizinated liquorice as only this form has the specific healing function without blood pressure elevation that is characteristic of standard liquorice root

when my son had his first colonoscopy, his inflamed and ulcerated areas were pretty nasty
He cannot take the usual meds for Crohn's for 2 reasons...firstly because he has Tourette Syndrome and steroids are contraindicated in TS, plus he has a history of severe bad reaction to prescription meds.

So

We followed the exact plan for the Maker's Diet for the full 40 days, and now use it as a foundation for his diet (all of us have benefitted by the dietary changes!)
In addition, my research led me to add the DGL-liquorice to heal the ulceration, as well as Boswellin-Curcumin(turmeric) and Slippery Elm capsules (we use the NOW brand) to reduce inflammation and provide a protective coating for his digestive tract. When he was still having flare-ups, we would add white willow bark capsules for extra anti-inflammatory action(nature's aspirin without the side effects!) as well as cramp bark to reduce the spasms

I posted recently that his latest blood test results confirmed what he has been experiencing...........remission! and all this with just careful diet and those special supplements, along with other healthy supplements that aid in the anti-inflammatory/healing process (eg garlic, ginger, royal jelly, marshmallow root, the probiotics, plant enzymes, flaxseed oil, etc etc)

My son does not seem to have gluten or dairy intolerance, but I do know that for many people with IBDs, eliminating these from their diet, even if they are not allergic to them, has really helped so it is worth a try!

anyway...I have rambled on but once again, just want to say that the sound dietary info in the Maker's Diet is excellent not just for those with IBDs but for everyone! Even if you dont follow the exact diet to the letter, simply implementing the principles can make a huge difference to your overall health:)
