Reaction to steroid injection
 

Yesterday, I received a steroid injection in my knee. It has been bothering me more the past few weeks than normal. Artritis -- ligament and tendon problems. I have also been tentatively dx with a Baker's cyst behind my knee. I had one about three years ago that burst. OUCH!

The good news is that my knee feels slightly better today (been icing it, ect). The bad news is that this morning during class, my face turned bright red and it remains that way. I feel as if I have a bad sun or wind burn. A little research on the computer revealed that this is a potential side effect that occurs rarely, and it is more likely to affect women. I remember a few years ago having the same problem and my doctor at that time said I had roscea. Now I think it probably occurred after I had a steroid injection :rolleyes:

It seems like I experience side effects to every single med I try. (allergic to penicillin, sulfa,, betaseron, copaxone, developed antibodies to tysabri.) Have had problems with numerous other meds. I definitely have a strange body. And my doctors do not understand why I am afraid to try new meds.

I also got very red faced from steroids. Even my legs got red but it went away eventually. I hope it's just a side effect and not an allergy. :hug:

Same here with the red, itchy skin with IV Solumedrol. Also broke out in hives so now I use Decadron instead. It's still a steroid, just different, and I'm not allergic to it......not yet anyway.

I also have not been able to sleep at all that past two nights. I gues enough of the steriod got into my bloodstream to cause these side effects. I did not think a simple injection could cause them. I do not remeber getting the red, itch skin with the iv , but I have only gone through that ine time (5 days). And I was really out if it at the time. That may have been my former doctor said I had roscea.

When a doctor gives you a shot directly near, or into an area that has inflammation, like Arthritis or, like me on Nov 24th, I had a few shots into the shoulder for Bursitis. If the ailment ends with *itis*, it mean there is inflammation going on in that part of the body. Thyroiditis, Appendicitis, etc.

The shot is not just Methylprednisone, or another steroid, but a *caine drug is added, such as Xylicaine, which is similar to Novocaine. If it ends in caine, it is to numb for pain. There are many they can inject along with a steroid.

What I am getting at is that the *cocktail shot* may have something in it that you are allergic to, not necessary the main steroid he used. There are many *caines* he could add to the shot.

You could ask what else was in the shot, it is not usually only a steroid. That is for the inflammation or swelling. The other is for pain or numbing.

Ice is good the first day, rub it a little to circulate the fluid. It usually follows the path of the pain and bathes the site.

Moist, warm towels used after helps too with the injection site, and the knee or other area a person gets injected for inflammation.

Thanks Lady, I know that it also had a numbing agent in it. I think xylicaine. But my reaction was not in /on my knee. It was just that my face turned red and hot. The redness is now gone, and my face just feels a bit burned now. I have been using ice on my knee. It seems like the inflammation has improved a bit.
