A couple of questions

Hi,
I have posted a couple of times on here, and now I have some more questions.
A quick rundown...My b12 was 153 in July 09. My TSH was 6.450. I saw a doctor last Thursday. She ran blood tests, and then gave me a B12 shot. I have to wait for a month before I get the results.
I am taking Jarrow B12 5000 mcg daily, to supplement. I know it is known that you may feel worst before you feel better, because I feel worst than ever before. The fatigue and weakness being the main culprit. I also have horrible burning in my right foot, and tingling pain, in both my feet and hands. One of my questions is, is this nerve damage from low B12 for so long...and how do doctors access that?
I also had an injury to my neck in 93..subluxation, and have really been having problems lately. I had an MRI done in 08 that showed a lesion in my brain. Would this cause the pain or a residue from the accident?
My doctor did not prescribe me anything except prilosec for my stomach because she is waiting for all the blood work. I am taking the B12 on my own. She said I would get 1 shot per month..
I am trying to be patient, but I want to be proactive in my own health. So I would like to know if there is anything else I can do while I wait on the doctor...
I have other issues, but with my brain fog it is easy for me to be frustrated trying to remember...
I appreciate any suggestions anyone can give me...
Have a Blessed Day..
Deb

That TSH is elevated, if one uses the new scale to evaluate hypothyroidism. The new scale goes from 0-3... the old scale goes to 6.

I'd get evaluation by an endocrinologist and perhaps a scan. It was only when I had a scan that they found my problem, and fixed it.

Some people say they get feelings tingling etc when they start B12.

I know when I started my thyroid hormone my numb feet started tingling like mad, and took a full year to get sensation back. They had started with pain, and slowly became pretty numb. I was surprised when they "woke up" again!

When one is low for a long time with B12, there is quite the adjustment to get things working correctly again.
I think you have at least 2 problems (and perhaps others that haven't been fully addressed yet..like Vit D) that are going to complicate your responses. The B12 is not harmful, so keep using it. I'd call the doctor and ask for that test result. It doesn't take a month to get that done. See if the nurses will give you the number..sometimes they will or at least have the doctor call you back.

I will do that

Thanks, I will call the doctor's office and see if I can get the results before my next appointment. What type of scan is it you mentioned? One for my thyroid?
Should I request to be seen by an endro if my doctor doesn't seem to want to send me?
I am also taking Vit D1000 IU and 800 mcg folic acid daily.. Is this a good thing?
Thank you,
Deb

One cannot say about the D without a blood test. Your post info says Tampa....do you get outside daily, enough to make your own D?

The scan I had was a radioactive technicium uptake, showing if the thyroid is working or has nodules. My left lobe was not taking up the contrast, and the right was enlarged. My blood work was close to normal but I had many physical signs of low thyroid.
I went to an endocrinologist after my internist was so so about it all.

Tampa

Yes right now I do live in Tampa. I am leaving tomorrow though. I try to get outside, but lately I have not felt good enough to get out. Is Vit D dangerous in taking too much? I understand a fair skinned person should be in the sun 1/2 hour each day to make enough vit D for them...it that correct?
I will be spending a few weeks in the Smoky mtns of Tenn where my parents live. I am waiting on a call back from the nurse about my blood work...
Would I get my vit D level from a CBC?
Thanks,
Deb

A CBC does not check for Vit D. That is a separate test...

I think you should watch the videos on this link:

http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/thread92116.html

The Vit D information is very new... many doctors are not up to date about it.

Thank you

I will watch these videos. I am all about learning all I can about all the vitamins..
I will post my results when I get my blood work back from the doc. and maybe request a Vit D test?
I have learned so much on here already, and I will continue to learn, until I can understand what my own body needs.
Thank you very much for your responses...

Hi Deb,
Has anyone mentioned celiac or gluten intolerance to you. Malabsorption is a huge issue with gluten issues...thyroid, and B12 deficiency are both symptoms of celiac/gluten intolerance. If you do have an issue with gluten, the medicines will not beable to help you as long as you continue to eat gluten. I think you should request testing for this, and please, do not let a doctor tell you, "You do not look celiac." There is not a look about it, testing needs done.
