second lumbar laminectomy...

My husband is preparing for his second lumbar laminectomy on Jan. 29, 2007. His first one was Jan. 6, 2002. He has been in excruciating pain. His CTscan revealed that he has a broken screw, and that the fusion did't take. Basically, the new doctor said that he didn't need to have the whole thing (L1, L2, L3, L4, L5 & S1) when he did. But since it was done, it now needs to be re-done. The area above the fusion is starting to degenerate as well. He is on a large amount of pain meds, and the concern is, other than the fact he has to repeat thesurgery, will he have to be on te same amount or more of meds for the rest of is life?
He is only 37, and has already had to give up one career, and now most likely another.:(
Has anyone else had a similar problem, and if so, how are you dealing with it?

Thanks for listening. MO

You should post on the Spinal Disorders forum. This forum is for people with spinal cord injuries.

Have not had the Lumbar Fusion and Laminectomy yet....My doctors have counseled me against getting the surgery done because of the high failure rates.

A laminectomy is just getting rid of the osteophytes that are growing and aggravating the nerve.

I certainly hope that things get better for you....I know how your husband feels.

No one really understands what a caregiver goes through...believe me I see what my husband goes through when I am in pain that he cannot help me with - so I feel for you.

Be strong, reaching out and asking for advice is great because contrary to the person that posted above me....most people are very understanding and are willing to share advice, experiences and recommendations with you.

All the best to you from the Great State of Alaska!!!!!

Kim
