P5P and Neuropathy

Does anyone have any idea if P5P can trigger neuropathy. I know when i have taken tiny doses of B6 i felt worsening of some neuropathy i still have in my arms due to hashimoto's thyroiditis. But i need to take P5P due to A genetic disorder i have called pyroluria which is a depletion of Vitamin B6 and Zinc as well as manganese.

Any information from anyone would be good. Or links.

Thank you.

I think you will have to ask your doctor who is treating you for the pyroluria what to do. People on high dose zinc may also have neuropathic symptoms, and become deficient in copper.(it is thought the low copper causes the neuropathy from high zinc).

B6 will cause neuropathy when deficient and also when at toxic levels. So it can give confusing symptoms.

Some people report more nerve symptoms as healing takes place from any neuropathy.

Neuropathy from toxicities usually is global, and would not settle only in your arms. All the sites I see say B6 toxicity affects walking ablility and the legs. Your arm symptoms may be part of a repetitive strain issue or overuse issue with your music activities.

Well the numbness, tingling and pain is prominent in my arms, hands/forearms. But i do have weakness in all of my muscles not very prominent but i was able to lift lots of heavy weights in the past in the gym and now i cannot do this. My muscle strength may appear "normal" comparatively to other people but it isn't normal to the amount of strength i had as well as muscle bulk previously.

After taking B6 i feel a weakening of my whole body.

I am definitely having more nerve symptoms but it appears as though it is slowly improving. Thanks for letting me know thats encouraging.

Is their a blood test to test for B6 levels in the body?

There is a blood test. But the interpretation of it is questionable.

It will reveal very low levels, and that is more accurate than the meaning of high numbers. Anyone taking a supplement will show elevated levels. The lab ranges were determined statistically on people who are NOT taking the B6 extra. So higher levels don't necessarily mean "toxic", but only reflect on the extra intake.

I did find an interesting paper on autistic children, who were found to have elevated B6 in the ABSENCE of supplements. The reason for this is not understood at this time.
The safe upper limit for B6 is 100mg a day at this time. But people vary and we have seen some here at 50mg a day or a bit less who have side effects.

B6 metabolism is genetically mediated. In some cases of babies born with seizures, called infantile spasms, they are given really high doses to maintain a seizure free life. In this case it is called vitamin DEPENDENCY. Vitamin dependency can occur with anything given in really high doses. For example really high Vit C (which was a fad of sorts when Linus Pauling was still alive) resulted in scurvy symptoms with suddenly stopped. It is now suggested that high dose anything should be tappered when it is decided to stop it.

I am curious to know what you are now taking in terms of B6 or P5P and if you symptoms have changed?

Thanks,

Janet
