Tongue bumps???
I feel lately like my tongue is raw. I looked in the mirror, and several of my taste buds are raw looking. My tongue feels a bit fat. I do not have any trouble breathing, swallowing, or managing my food, just my tongue feels raw.
anyone ever have this? what is this? will it go away? |
A raw, red, beefy red, swollen tongue can mean a folic acid deficiency. If you don't eat dried beans or fortified cereals you might want to try a supplement. It is water soluble so you won't overdose. If it doesn't work within a few days you know it is something else. Good luck.

Not sure if it's the same thing as I experience but by your discription it sure sounds like it. This will happen to me time to time and will go away after I drink plenty of water during the day. But mine only lasts for a day or so at a time.

spoke to my MD via email. Sent him a pic. he said it is usually something viral that causes that, altho diets with highly acidic foods can make it happen too. Said if it wasnt better by friday to swing in and see him.
The DH has reported that his tongue is the same way. hmm...things that make ya go hmmm... |
When I eat too much sugary foods I get a sore tongue. Something about the sugar causes the sore bumps on the tongue. I dont know if sugar is acidic (sucked at chemistry)
I've also gotten the sore bumps at times when I havent had too much sugar, so it might be viral in nature too. |
eating sugar will cause us to be acidic. I will try to eat some alk style stuff and see if I can calm it.
no sugar for a day or two! |
Do you happen to chew sugarless gum? My husband was having something similar plus the inside of his cheeks was raw. He was chewing two pieces of the gum everyday. He stopped and it cleared up in a day or so. He waited a couple of weeks and tried the gum again. Within 3 days his tongue and cheeks were red and sore again.

I dont chew gum, and I never eat anything that has artificial sweetners in it. I could see how that much friction could cause some soreness tho.
My tongue is already some better. I doubled my hydration today, and have avoided sugar, and salted things. I see those brownies on the counter, and have to close my eyes! I will use a baking soda rinse before I retire. I was doing some research and this is very common. I was impressed with how many folks report this condition. Since the DH has it too, I am gonna assume its one of two things. 1. either we both have become acidic with our diets, or 2. its a virus. Truly odd. |
Mmmm next time it happens to me I'll have to remember what I've been eating!
|
its about half better today. I avoided sugar, salt and acid foods like tomato sauce, or oj.
I read that some folks who get this have HUGE taste buds, and some even resort to clipping them off! Im not that brave! Many rumors about what causes this, from virus to acid foods, to just keeping it irritated because rubbing your tongue across your teeth is like scratching it. Some say its vitamin def, others say its just one of those things. I dunno...Im just glad its on its way out. how bizaare! |
