Off Topic - death of nephew
My sweet nephew, Riley Hall, was coming upon his 23 rd birthday.
He was living in Pomona and going to college there, and he was involved in a rock band. He was living the "hippie" life, complete with all that entails, and he had several room mates. His grandfather was Don Leslie the man who made all of the organ speakers and about 200 music patents. Riley wanted to follow in his footsteps. But on Thurs. eve. he and his friends were over drinking Yagermeister in the garage and about 4 am they all headed into bed. For some reason Riley stayed there and fell asleep. The details get fuzzy. He died of alcohol poisoning, hypothermia and asphyxiation. I don't think he or his friends knew such a death was possible. I am sure that if you have teen or younger, or older, he wouldn't mind sharing this story to save lives. I always tell everyone that AA saved lives, and I am a big supporter. I spoke before our Betty Ford Theater group and I hope this gets around to teach as many people as possible of the threat. My love to all. Remember, never judge, never expect perfection, life is a journey. |
I am so sorry for your loss. I will keep you and yours in my thoughts!
I worry about my college age son, it just takes one mistake or bad choice. |
Tam, I am so sorry for your families' loss. It never makes any sense.
I have 2 college-age daughters so this binge drinking thing is always a concern. Not only for the drinkers but those driving anywhere near them. God Bless. |

My heart goes out to you and his family. That's a terrible loss.
It is good that you are willing to speak about this. You may really save lives by speaking out. You're very brave.:hug::hug: |
I want to make clear that this was not at my house. And I'm done with "off topic" and I sincerely thank you for letting me share and listening and writing kinds words to me!Oh, thank you. It was so hard to see him in the tubing and all, my poor sweet cousins who had to make the decision.
I've told my girls many times that before they were 21 they did not have my permission to drink but call me if they got stuck somewhere - and they did call as so many of you know... then I told them that you don't let a friend just pass out, sleep it off, etc., as they can go into a coma, or throw up and choke on it, so I tell them to call me and I call the parents and tell them where they are, or on some occasions we call the emergency number right away depending if there is no response or eyes are going back in the head, etc. The point is, this child (esp. under age) (but over age too) is not OUR child, it is not for us to make the decision, and maybe because they group up with an attorney as a mother who always had scary cases to talk to them about, they've always done the right thing. They've always called me and we get it taken care of. I am just realizing that they must really love and trust me to call me like that... But we older ones must always sit around the campfire and tell the younger ones what might happen. Gee, I also am remembering how many times my kids called me and said, "Sally wants to talk to you - just listen mom." And I end up getting the kid into a doctor, or get there and call the parent while driving...in other words, my kids know that I'll do the right thing and maybe, just maybe, won't embarrass them along the way. God bless our children, every one. |
