Mrs D, or anyone who can speak to tarsal tunnel and neuropathy

I posted a few months ago about tingling and nerve pain in the feet after I started a walking program, probably in bad shoes.

Saw Professory of Neuromuscular medicine at UF Shands in Jacksonville. After conduction tests, he told me I have neuropathy. As I had had a positive tinel's sign when I visited my podiatrist a couple of weeks ago, I asked him about tarsal tunnel, and he said he "couldn't see any evidence of it in tests, but it's hard to diagnose sometimes". He took 15 vials of blood for numerous blood tests, some of which take 6 weeks to complete. I follow up in 2 months. He prescribed neurontin, up to 1800 mg daily.

Yesterday, I saw my podiatrist. Thyroid, diabetes, SED, B12 all ruled out. She asked if anything was said at Shands about tarsal tunnel, and I gave her the above statement. She had strapped my feet two weeks ago, and I told her it helped some. She wants me to be fit for orthotics, but does not have an appointment open until the 22nd; and they take 6-8 weeks to come back.

I am kind of beside myself at this point. Walking does not seem to bother me, but when I quit, that's when it's bad. I tried an ace bandage on ankle and arch overnight, but when I took it off the next day, the buzzing was crazy. Ice seems to help somewhat.

It just seems like this is a long time for me to wait to get some help. I am so afraid of damaging myself further before they figure this out. I am taking advil and aleve on my own - they don't do much for pain and I find methadone doesn't cut it. I am doing stretches I was taught in physical therapy. I don't know how far I should be walking, if I should get some sort of insoles on my own, whether to pick up some night braces or if they will make it worse, or whether to try the ace bandages again.

Do you have any suggestions for me while I wait for something definitive - or at least more near to a diagnosis?

Thanks for your time.

I have started on 1000 B12 a day.

Got a new pair of shoes yesterday with a little less arch support and upped my neurontin from 600 to 900 (heading toward the 1800). When I woke up this morning, I was burning up above the ankles. Now I am really afraid.

Hello, Lucy. Welcome to NeuroTalk!

When nerves get injured for whatever reason, they kick up a fuss.. and they cannot be ignored.

I gather from your other posts, that you have foot pain from kickboxing? This might mean some tendonitis or trauma to the ankle or the ligaments that hold the ankle together.

Here is a site with diagrams to show the foot anatomy, near the bottom of this link is the ankle. Yellow shows the nerves.

You can see how tightly everything is held together. Trauma to the foot and/or ankle causes internal compression of nerves, which then send signals to stop the activity and do something about whatever set them off.

I think at this point, you could benefit from soaking your feet in epsom salt baths. Using lukewarm water, and 2 to 3 oz of epsom salt powder in a dish pan, 2 or 3 times a day for a week, may help take the internal swelling down, and help those compressed nerves. The Neurontin may be making swelling worse, since it causes fluid retention in many people.

I see from your other posts, that you have ovarian cysts? Do you have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome? It is called PCOS. If so, you may have elevated glucose levels, which often come with this problem. This elevation of glucose will cause its own foot problems. You may have been on the way to problems with your metabolic profile, and the exercise activity pushed you over the edge.

How old are you? What can you tell us here about your general health, medication and drug use, etc that might affect your feet?
What tests have you had? Things like that.

Hi I am sorry you are facing this. At the start of my condition they thought I may have had TTS. I was put in an airboot by the orthopedic before going to the foot/ankle specialist because the orthopedic thought it was an injury though I never fell. Anyhow the foot doc who thought I had TTS thought the air boot was good well since it turned out to not be tts or an injury and was PN and RSD it made my condition worse. Time I had every dx test I was at such a bad place. I am not saying this is for you but to make sure to rule out other conditions. Also that dose of neurontin is low. Some need 3600 which I am working up to. I did 300 increments because each increase causes me to feel really bad but it wears off the side effects. I encourage you to talk to your doc about a better anti inflamatory med for as needed. Also sometimes there needs to be a combo of meds like neurontin. Have you had any mris?Oh yeah also if I had TTS or not basically the treatment was the same and meds like neurontin. The last possible thing they want to do is surgery on that. Sorry this is all over the place. It is how my mind it is right now. Hang in there and feel better
