My mom fell down...went BOOM!

We had some excitement...a few firefighters and paramedics...a little blood.

My mom was in the laundry room, getting her sheets out of the washing machine while our cleaning lady is here, when she tripped over the floor mat that was folded up a bit on the floor. (cleaning lady was about to mop when mom kicked her out of the laundry room for a few minutes)

Mom pretty much faceplanted on the floor and cut her hand on the side of the rubber part of the floor mat when she fell, and she may have dislocated her right shoulder, or broke it or something. (not sure yet, she's at the ER right now)

I couldnt lift her, and the cleaning lady made one attempt to see if we could get mom off the floor. When my mom yelled about her shoulder, the cleaning lady and I just looked at each other and said "911".

So the really cute firefighters came and scooped mom up off the floor, the paramedics assessed her, and wrapped up her shoulder to stabilize it. They said it wasnt a matter of life and death that she go to the hospital, so we declined the ambulance and I called my dad to come get her. (he works at one of the hospitals downtown)

My dad came home, and we got her in the car, and he took her back down to the hospital he works at. (her doctor is actually there today, my dad was working with him) so she's going to get some nice pretty pictures of her shoulder.

I get the feeling my dad is going to be retiring this week if she's got more than a sprain. If it's dislocated or broken, there's no way I can help her do stuff. I dont have the upper body strength to help her do things. I'm hoping he can keep working, since they both need the money. (maybe he can do FMLA...if that's the right word for it?)

I hope she doesnt have anything broken or dislocated. I didnt see the fall. I was downstairs pretty much directly below her when she fell. I heard her fall and it was a pretty hard thump or two before the final boom of her falling.

Hopefully she didnt hurt too much.

I hope she is OK and nothing serious.

Bless her heart! I am so terrified of that happening to my mom and mom in law. I hope they find she just bruised or pulled something..no breaks or dislocations! ouch!

the firefighters were cute...I actually mentioned that to them. :o

I told them that I cant lift her, and since she said she was hurt, I figured that I'd "call the really cute firefighters to come and scoop her off the floor". One of the firefighters said "arent you sorry you got us then?" (as if they werent all cute...)

They were great. They helped her get up, then wrapped up her shoulder to stabilize it, and then helped her sit down on her rollator. I almost let them take her to the hospital, but an ambulance ride is so expensive, and I figured if I had to, I could probably get her into my car instead and drive her.

I noticed that they'd come from way far away from here. So, I'm guessing the city took the squad and engine that's just down the street from us out of service again...which explains the FIFTEEN MINUTE response time. (last time I called 911 for a possible fire, it took then 5 minutes to come from the station that's about a mile or two away)

I saw the numbers on the engine and the squad and they were from a station that's way south of here. Stupid city budget cuts.

Gentle hugs for Mother , knowing pretty much how she must have felt. I hate when that happens.

Healing prayers being said.

(((hugs))) to both you and your Mom. I'm hoping your Mom is doing better and it's nothing too serious. My Mom was going through a bad patch for a while. One time while I was "Mommy sitting" so my Dad could run an errand, she fell. I tried to pick her up - what was I thinking?? I ended up calling my sister and sitting the floor holding my Mom (she was unhurt but very upset) until my sister came and got her up. It was scary, and eye opener, to be in a position where I couldn't even help her but was the only one there.

I called my dad. They're still down at the hospital, and they still havent taken any pictures of her shoulder yet!!

I knew he shouldnt have taken her to the hospital he works at. (not the greatest place in town...it's a good hospital, excellent trauma center, their emergency room for non-traumas is a lot more sucky than the rest of the ER's in town tho)

They've been there for more than an hour. Not that I should be surprised, because when I hurt my eye about 12yrs ago (my dog had put his claw thru my eyelid accidentally) I sat there for 3 or 4 hours while the doctors and nurses were eating pizza at the main desk. Good thing my dad knew the head nurse on duty that day...he went and got her and they came in and checked my eye out. (scratched cornea) and then the nurse "accidentally" lost my paperwork and we never got charged for the visit. (yay!)

So, the fact that they havent looked at her after an hour shouldnt surprise me. Last time I took her to the ER it was for an anaphylaxic (sp?) reaction of some sort...At least an anapyhlaxic reaction gets you bumped up in line for being seen.

I just hope she didnt dislocate or break anything. This is only the second time she's gone to the ER for a fall. (she broke a rib about 10yrs ago when TinyMonsters accidentally tripped her while he was chasing the neighbor's evil lawn mower)

I hope she's just sprained...

I also hope I was right to decline the ambulance...I still think she'd be sitting there waiting, even if the squad had taken her to a different hospital.
