Is Quorn a better alternative to Soy?
 

Hi, I had heard about Quorn YEARS ago, and I just remembered it as an alternative to foods made from Soy. Like Tofu, veggie burgers etc.

Since I don't want to eat that much Soy, well, I just want to know if Quorn and products including Quorn, well is it safe?

I went to the website and discovered it's made from fungi.

take a look, and let me know if you think this is HEALTHIER than Soy based products.

Quorn is made from the soil mould Fusarium venenatum strain PTA-2684 (previously misidentified as the parasitic mold Fusarium graminearum [13]). The fungus is grown in continually oxygenated water in large, otherwise sterile fermentation tanks. During the growth phase, glucose is added as a food for the fungus, as are various vitamins and minerals (to improve the food value of the resulting product). The resulting mycoprotein is then extracted and heat-treated to remove excess levels of RNA. Previous attempts to produce such fermented protein foodstuffs were thwarted by excessive levels of DNA or RNA; without the heat treatment, purine, found in nucleic acids, is metabolised by humans, producing uric acid, which can lead to gout.[

I then said to myself "what is better?" Soil mould fusarium venenatum strain PTA-2684 (previously misidentified as the parasitic mold Fusarium graminearum 13), or a little piece of my teriyaki grilled chicken.???

I can't get past the words soil mould Fusarium venenatum strain PTA 2684. I don't even know what this is.

Would you try this? that's what I really would like to know. Say, someone brought some Quorn over to your house, would you try it?

I have to admit, this Quorn seems a bit creepy.
It appears to be a European thing too.

But then we eat lobster, crabs, snails, octopus, and they are creepy too. I am reminded of a pot luck there was at my son's elementary school. I was working and didn't have time to make something, so I went to an Italian place by me, which made really nice salads, that had the little octopus babies on them. Really small and kind of "cute" with little tentacles, about 3in in diameter for the whole thing. I thought the kids would get a kick out of them. But in reality the little girls totally freaked out. These kids were 5-6 yrs old. I showed one little girl, her name was Zoe, how to eat it, and she ran screaming from the room....

I guess whatever you get used to??? So I exposed my son to all sorts of things, and now he loves to cook! I however, don't feel drawn to this Quorn stuff...maybe if it had little tentacles? LOL

I think they should have came up with a better name.. too much like corn:confused:

the rapeseed oil name was changed to canola oil.

My thought is the more something has to be processed the more chances of contamination & additives.
I vote for the real food every time.

real butter - not margarine
real half n half - not man made chemical creamers

Reminds me when I came home from work when I was about 20. My mother said "We are having something different tonight" I said "okay, I'm game".

I walk in the door (my parents were in another part of the house). I spotted a big pot on the stove, and it was steaming and it smelled wonderful.

Well!!!! I will NEVER forget my reaction.

I took off the pot lid and I gulped (not believing what I was seeing). I took another look and took a fork and gently lifted it out and started to yell (and I mean yell). My mother and father come running all scared and took one look at me, and started laughing.

I took one look at them and said "why the hel* are YOU laughing, do you KNOW WHAT IS IN THIS POT??"

My mother said "oh for goodness sake, calm down, haven't you ever seen a TONGUE before?"

I looked at her and said "Are you out of your mind?" I really thought she was.

She said "It's a delicacy". And I said "For Who"??

And she started laughing again. She take out this COW'S TONGUE and proceeds to slice it up.

That's when I announced "I'm leaving and I'll be back later when that THING IS OUT OF THE KITCHEN."

When I came home, I made scrambed eggs!!!

I will NEVER forget that and it's over 40 years ago.

The very thought of Duck Soup makes me shiver

Reminds me of when I was younger and they made a roast beef and on Sundays, everybody would gather around and it would come to the table, nice and juicy (read that as bloody), and my father would say "put some blood on it".

I never thought about it as actual BLOOD but now that I think of it!!!

Around the corner from my house there is a new Chinese Takeout.

On the wall, they list all the foods that they serve.

Their most popular?? PIG STOMACH SOUP.

Well, after they opened, Alan and I went to the laundromat that is directly across the street. Having already read the menu, I told Alan "go and walk across the street and look at the first item in the third menu up onthe wall".

I watched him go and do this.

The look on his face was pricess.

He came roaring back in saying "We are NEVER going in there, they sell PIG STOMACH SOUP".

I laughed my head off.

To each his own I gather. I hesitate to look this soup up. Reminds me of an Italian dish my family used to make called TRIPE. The italian lady downstairs makes it all the time.

And do you know that my culture also eats calves brains. I really can't get my head around that one.
