Matt Lauer

Did I spell that right? Of the Today Show?

I met him this morning. He's here at work interviewing 4 people or doing whatever he does with them. Right now. Or at least they were still at it 30 minutes ago. I only recognized one of the interview-ee names - Gene Franz. He was the main Apollo Flight Director and wrote the book Failure is Not an Option.

They're set up in the historic Apollo mission control room and they're using the front row console seats.

They were here yesterday too.

The local CBS station was filming at the front gate this morning too - I understand Houston's mayor is going to Washington to try to keep NASA jobs in Houston and the station did a live thing with the rockets at the entrance as a backdrop.

That would be Gene Kranz for those playing along at home (sorry Tom...had to...lol). If you haven't already read it, his book is quite entertaining. It gave a good picture of how much of the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs were kind being made up as they went along; as well as how young and unproven alot of the people thrust into important roles were. Yet those people came together when it counted and learned some hard lessons from their mistakes that made them capable of responding with a solution when the Apollo 13 incident occurred.

Truly remarkable people who made those programs happen, and it would be a shame to walk away from the human space exploration legacy that we have built upon their shoulders with Skylab and the Shuttle. I hope we can come up with a means to keep flying the shuttle as long as necessary and stay on track to keep reaching further into space.

Hey Tom~ The Today Show said that Matt was on a special assignment today, so that's where he was. We want to see you on camera. ;) Will watch tomorrow to see if they report on it....

So, Tom, is Matt as cute in person as he seems on TV? Do his big brown eyes just glow and give you a warm, fuzzy feeling?

He was nice. He was surprised at how junky the building was, but he came in thru the loading dock, which is always junky. He was wearing glasses, which surprised the people that actually recognized him (I had to be told who was who).

The interviews or whatever are going to be aired on NBC dateline or something like that on April 11th. I don't know enough about the networks to say much more than that.

Guess that means we don't get an autograph, eh Tom??

I was asking for AMN... she made me do it.
