What causes gas to build up in your inside untill it is very painfull???

My Dad gets gas build up, and it becomes very painfull. We have to stretch him untill he burps it all out. He drinks out of straws maybe that could be the cause... He thinks it is from some Dan-Active yogurt that he ate recently, but it has lasted a while now.

Any suggestions or experiences/quickfixes will be appreciated?

Thanks

dear jamie,
he may not have the proper enzymes to digest food properly, perhaps you should research - what he is eating / and find the correlating enzyme -
http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/gas/
I use enzymedica ... I do not sell this product nor do I wish you to buy this product -
just research they way the body works, we get most of all our nutrtion
through the gut, GI tack, if his gut is putrid - he may need to do many
things to cleanse it, - gently -especially if he is taking medication...

there is a book I have read through out the years updated many times - Nutrtional Healing - by Phyllis Balch.

Gas can come from many things.

1) too much sugar -- if there are nasty bugs in the colon from antibiotic use, this will be more extreme.

2) gas producing vegetables...sometimes Beano helps this

3) the elderly have slower movement thru the bowel as a rule, and gas can develop and get stuck... using a gas product like Gas-X may help

4) Using acid reducing drugs or having achlorhydria with aging, prevents proteins from being broken down (they need acid) and then they ferment in the bowel...making alot of gas.

5) gall bladder slowing down, stones or inflammation.

These are just some causes.

One possibility that I have been thinking about is H. pylori. It produces urease (>ammonia) which is alkaline and interacts with stomach acid the way vinegar does with baking soda. The result is bloating.

Worldwide, about 50% of people are infected (the most common one of all) and most don't know it, so don't rule it out.

Thanks!

I want to thank you all for your help and information. After reading the posts it doesnt seem to be another serious health problem on top of his Parkinsons, even though it is painfull. We will check into his diet and try to make changes and if that doesnt work we'll see a doctor.

Thanks
