Peripheral Neuropathy
I am totally new to this type of online info. I have read all of the questions from Larp and replies from Mrs D regard PN. I have recently been prescribed Metanx by my podiatrist. Am staring my second month on this med and am interested in trying the individual components of Metanx and will look into the recommended items at iherb. The one thing that I found very interesting is Mrs D's info regarding the relation between statins and neuropathy. I have been on Lovastatin for years (prescribed by cardiologist after angioplasty (and subsequent repair of stents). Would like for info regarding this situation and where I can research the subject.

Welcome!
:welcome_sign: You've come to a great place!
MrsD (and others) are absolutely fabulous at sharing pertinent info. I'm sure they'll be along shortly! The PN forum is very active with friendly folks who've been battling this condition. If you scroll down the main menu you may find other areas (such as the medications forum, herbal....etc) and do a "search" on those meds, you may find additional information as well..... Hope to get to know more about you! Rae |
Welcome to neurotalk.
Glad you've already found the Peripheral Neuropathy forum here--great group of people and an amazing list of links at the top in the Useful Webistes section; collectively the contributions define a database that probably overmatches any other currently available on-line. And that includes info about nutritoin to help neuropathy--and the somewhat controversial connection between statins and myopathy/neuropathy (the latter is a topic that's been discussed for quite a while but has only recently and grudingly begun to be acknowledged by the medical establishment, as the pharma companies may have a lot of liability and monetary losses there).
How much testing have you had to determine the casue of your symptoms (if such a cause can indeed be found)? I highly recommend the Liza Jane spreasheets--these were developed by a number of us on the baord to be as comprehesive a list of potential tests for neuropathic symtpoms we could think of: www.lizajane.org A good way to check what you've had, suggest new tests to docs, and track results over time. |
Welcome to NT
There's lots of info here and caring people that will share with you about PN and related conditions. I understand that's a very difficult condition to live with. I hope you find relief soon. See you around the board. |
Welcome to NeuroTalk.
This subject of statins is becoming HUGE. I gave a link to a post in the Metanx thread where I give some of the newest info, here it is again: http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/sh...ghlight=statin Post #3 there gives the link to a PDF which is pretty new, listing all the problems of statins based on previous studies. There is more on post #6. Also Medication Sense by Dr. Cohen MD...his link is good too. He has book you get on the subject. Also Dr. Graveline MD has a site and book on Lipitor and what is did to HIM. All those links are on that thread. Here is another. http://www.thincs.org/links.htm http://www.ravnskov.nu/cholesterol.htm Just type in "cholesterol myth" into Google. You can spend days reading from that one search. Dr. Cohen has a study on his website that reveals how doctors dismiss side effects, from statins, because they don't understand them, or have been lied to by drug reps. http://www.medicationsense.com/artic...cts012108.html People who have a stent like you do, are in a very difficult place. Finding information on stent recipients not using a drug compared to those who do use one, will be hard to find. Many studies are done by the drug companies themselves. PubMed link is above, and you can click that, and search "stent statin" and 239 papers will come up. This one shows no difference between Lipitor use combined with Plavix, vs no Lipitor. (and it is from another country Korea) http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19372620 Quote:
This new video from Univ Cal SF... is long but it describes which LDL fractions are very harmful... the very low LDL which are not tested routinely. Evidently the new thought is that regular LDL are not dangerous, but the VL LDL is. That "thought" may change as well, like everything else in medicine! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBnniua6-oM You can improve your future by just avoiding sugar and fructose! The video is long, but worth it in the end. The cholesterol portion is about in the middle. Realize that the massive mountain of information on statins has be compiled by the drug companies to convince doctors to use them. They are very persuasive. But many doctors over time, have come to realize that there is more to the story. The amount of homework you will have to do in order to decide if you are to change your therapy, is very large. It is a personal decision, and will have to be discussed with your doctor. Expect a battle... I have one with my own doctor frequently. Endothelial inflammation is the start of plaque. You can reduce that risk with quality curcumin product (which reduced endothelial inflammation as much as a statin...Lipitor. Quote:

When you search on PubMed, if you decide to, use only generic names for drugs, and keyword carefully. To get the Vit C paper, I used "c-reactive protein statin" as a keyword. The drug industry does its slanting with other drugs too, and this "statin" issue is just one of many these days. It will be your decision after doing this homework as to your future. I cannot "tell" you what to do, but I do think patients need ALL the information concerning drugs, to make informed decisions. And if you are not taking a quality CoQ-10 product, now would be the time to start. |

Just wanted to extend a hearty welcome You couldn't have come to a better place. I listen to everything that they all say, and I've changed my life accordingly. And Mrs. D is my health Guru, (as well as many others). when she speaks, I LISTEN. So, you LISTEN!!! Read, read read, and do all you can nutrition wise. This is a great site with great people and lots of good info. Better info than what you will get from a physician. Remember, Doctor's PRACTICE medicine. they DO NOT practice nutrition. So with any pill that you take, and any med that you take, be mindful of interactions, and put GOOD stuff in your body. Your body will respond positively. Might take a while, but it will. My husband got his stent a few years ago, did the cardiac rehab thing and became a full vegetarian. Me?? I eat a little organic chicken and some fish. I also grow my own sprouts in my kitchen, and I take Methyl B-12 every day. Helped very much with my neuropathy. I see you take Metanx. Very cool. I began the Methyl B-12 two years ago. I take 3 mgs to 5 mgs every morning. I wish you well in your ongoing well-being. Take care, Melody |

Welcome & Thanks
Welcome merniebj: You have found a great place for info. I am learning all the time. I just learned something new from your post and want to thank you for bringing it to my attention.
I don't know how I missed mrsD's other posts on statins, but am glad I found the info now. Melody is right. mrsD always has great information. I just read a few of her articles on statins, but am going to take time to read them all this morning. My doctor just started me on Crestor last month. So far I haven't noticed any side effects, but am going to talk with him about it at my next visit. Again, welcome and Thank you. |

I suggest you read alot, especially the PDF from Canada which targets women, to see if the benefits you may accrue outweigh the risks of this drug. Most doctors have no clue how toxic these drugs are. Basically they damage mitochondria, and the results can be severe in some people. It is thought that genetics plays a part now, in how people will respond to statins. As the other patents have expired, more data is coming out (previously suppressed by Big Pharma) as to the risks of this class of drugs. In the near future I will predict that they will only be used for severe genetic familial hypercholesteremia, which is what they were designed for, before Big Pharma started pushing them for more normal people. You will notice that the new commercial for Crestor does not mention heart attack, but only "athero". One test you can request is a lipo-a protein blood test. If this is elevated, your risks are higher. These levels are genetically determined and very difficult to alter. If it is low or normal, you probably could do without a statin. For example my lipo-a when I had it run last year was very low. This test may help you and your doctor decide about statin use. The other test you can request is the "small" or "VL" LDL... which is normally not in a panel. This VL (very low size or small) LDL is more predictive of blood vessel plaque. http://www.healthcentral.com/heart-d...81/lipoprotein Taking a statin is a MAJOR decision... as you may be giving up your future to something that will decrease your comfort and quality of life. This list of diseases resulting from long term statins increases every year. This PDF is one you should read: http://www.joimr.org/JOIMR_Vol7_No1_Dec2009.pdf The negative effect of statins on the myelin of nerves: http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/j...TRY=1&SRETRY=0 http://www.whp-apsf.ca/pdf/statinsEvidenceCaution.pdf This is an eye opener about women and statin usefulness and side effects. 38 pgs! Mitochondrial damage: http://insciences.org/article.php?article_id=1833 Here is some interesting news about Sidney Wolfe MD who has been a huge crusader for safer drugs (including Crestor). http://www.theheart.org/article/932995.do appointed to safety committee of FDA recently! Also this from their website: http://www.worstpills.org/results.cfm?drug_id=1025 notice Crestor listed as causing kidney damage 75 times higher than other than other statins! If you Google "Sidney Wolfe Crestor" there is much to be found! |
