Repeated Fusions
 

I am 50+ male, who has had 3 spinal fusions and am heading for a 4th. My first one was when I was in 9th grade, in 1968. It was S1-L5. Second was in 2000 at L5-L4. Third was 2005 at L4-L3. Now looking at L3-L2. After the last two surgeries, I havehad about 3-4 years of little pain and pretty normal activity. But the level above the previous fusion deteriorates and another fusion is needed. I am wondering if there is a faciltiy that can help me stop this progression up my spine.

Hi ~ I don't think any such place exists, since having fusions in the first place makes the spine unstable and CAUSES you to herniate and need more fusions. It's quite well known that even when you don't have fusion (I didn't) but just have a laminectomy/disectomy that the levels above and below are gonna bulge and/or herniate sooner or later. The same holds true of fusions ~ the levels above/below are going to bulge/herniate too. It just causes instability in the spine. You've seen it yourself. I don't think any "place" can stop the progression. It's just the nature of the beast unfortunately.

I'm sorry you're having trouble again. This sure sucks, doesn't it?? I have a bunch that are herniated too, but because of osteoporosis, I'm inoperable. lol. So, not much I can do about it.

Hi, I agree with Leesa, I've read that within 11 years after a spinal surgery, a person will more than likely require another surgery due to the stress put on the upper and lower levels. I had my first fusion Feb 22nd of this year, I expect that more than likely, sumwhere within the next 11 years, I'll require another. Its a roller coaster ride, one I can't relate to yet.
