working overseas on ssd
has anyone ever been caught working overseas with unreported income while collecting disability?
what might happen if someone tried to do that? thanks |
Social Security will probably sue you for the difference, and consider that you aren't disabled.

Nolo's 4th edition (his latest & best) discusses living overseas. I would check very carefully with the government of the country you are considering whether they have taxes and if they report to the US expatriates working in their country. You can earn up to $1,000a month legally (after expenses) and still lmaintain SSDI so if you stay under that limit there's no problem. Yo do need to return to the US every so often, I thonk it's every 6 months. Your airfare, etc. would be part of what you deduct from your income to help you stay under the $1,000 limit. |
Here is the link to SSA's page for collecting SSDI benefits while living outside the country. Near the bottom is a list of things you must report. An item on that list is returning to work.

What you are considering is called Concealed Work Activity.

hey..
Free11,
If you're trying to do this or thinking about it let me know so I can give ya some help on behalf of every one who is disabled rightfully and can't collect. |
What countries report earnings to the usa?
How can that be determined? I read the link about all the fraud type cases. These are all people working in the usa (and had significant resources. Illegal stupid and greedy.) Has anyone been caught working overseas collecting ssd? Again what countries report earnings to the usa? thanks all |
I agree with you that there are people concealing work in the US and they are doing something illegal, stupid and greedy (I would add the word fraudulent). So concealing work outside the US is also illegal, stupid, greedy and fraudulent.
Won't help you do something illegal, stupid, greedy or fraudulent. And Jim 0918, if people are rightfully disabled and can't collect, then they are also not able to work even if they leave the US. If they can work outside the US, they can work inside the US. So those people cannot be considered rightfully disabled. They may have the opinion that they are disabled, but the law must not agree with them. |
good points made
the issue is not so simple nor cut and dry much more to it than than that thankfully research, q and a, and discussion are allowed has anyone been caught working on ssd overseas? what countries report earnings back to the usa? thanks all good replies |
