toenail problem

I don't know if this is caused by a vitamin deficiency or not. I've been searching the Internet and nail problems can be caused by fungus, yeast, dreadful diseases - you name it! My big toenail (just one) is yellow and has a horizontal line running through it. I've been trying to "cure" it for 2 years. The first year I used a cotton ball to put vinegar on it twice a day. The second year I used a q-tip to put tea tree oil on it twice a day. It always looks "good" below the line, but as the old line grows out, a new line grows in and it looks bad above the "new" line. Kind of hard to explain. I did find a website that said yellow nails are often caused by diseases of the lungs, thyroid, or lymphatic system. But I would think some serious disease would affect more than 1 nail! (I hope!). Oh yes, another website said it could be caused by malnutrition. Again, I would think it would affect all nails? Any suggestions or am I in the wrong place? THANKS!

My aunty had a fungus under a fingernail and it sounded like how you describe. It looked yellow and it also looked a bit gnarly (like rough tree bark) or misshapen. I don't remember how she ever fixed it.

My son dropped something really heavy right on the nail bed of his big toe years ago and it must have damaged the nail bed and it's always grown differently. It looks a little yellow and gnarly as well.

Just searched for fungus and toe nails and found a pic on a site. If it looks like that and you've had it all this time, I'd go see a podiatrist.

Lara, thanks for the link. I looked at it and several other Internet pictures, and I still haven't found one that looks like mine. It doesn't look really nasty, but its definitely not normal.

hi jamie

wearing shoes that scrunch the toe might cause a ridge. do you have a pair that you don;t wear often that aren't very comfortable? i learned this the hard way. i had a bump on a toenail that would grow out and come back. i threw those shoes away. i only wore them a few times a year. a few weeks after wearing them the last time...i noticed the bump was back

Curious, I would love:hug: that cure! However, since I became a sahm, I have lived in crocs, tennis shoes, wide clogs. In other words, I have spoiled my feet!:p

Natural Remedy for Toe-nail Fungus

My GP told ME to use good old "Vicks Vapor Rub" once a day on my toe-nail and I could not believe it........ within 4-6 months the old yellow toe-nail had fallen off and a brand NEW one had grown in its place - I have done this with three infected yellow toe-nails (new toe-nail each time).

BTW - My husband still has his yellow old toe nail that him and his GP has been treating with meds for about 3 years now..... and YES, you guessed it - he does not use the Vicks as I did.

Good Luck.....

Thanks! I read that too at one time. Ok, here's my plan until someone tells be something better. ;) I'll try to soak my toe in vinegar for 10 minutes a day AND put Vick's (and a sock:p) on it before I go to bed! It's so frustrating to be diligent about the treatment for a year before finding out if it works or not!:o
