ASTYM system* a therapy approach

thought I'd post this - I just heard about it -

http://astym.com/patients.htm

What is the ASTYM System?

The ASTYM system* is a therapy approach which provides patients relief from a number of injuries and disorders (click on “Which diagnoses respond well to the ASTYM system” to see a listing). This treatment is effective for new injuries as well as persistent, nagging injuries. One of the most exciting aspects of the treatment is that significant improvement often occurs even in cases where other treatments have failed. The success of the System is documented for a wide variety of diagnoses and can be viewed in the Outcomes and Research Section.

*The ASTYM System originated as Augmented Soft Tissue Mobilization or “ASTM” and was then known as ASTM AdvantEDGE before the name was shortened to ASTYMTM .

I ran across the ASTYM name in a comment on youtube while I was researching ART. Naturally, I came back to this forum and searched for it. This is the only thread that mentions ASTYM.

Has anyone tried this or know any more about it personally, or through people they know?

It's not that exciting as they don't mention TOS, but I thought I would check.

Looks like standard ischemic compression of trigger points to me.

Hey, hey, hey!!!!

Oh, I've had ASTM, or whatever you may want to call it.

I call it torture at its finest.

They slap some cocunut buttery cream on you. (for me it was my upper body, neck, pecs, arms, hands and thumbs, and lower back - gettin' greased up for about 2 hours of torture takes a lot of cream)

Then they take these little hard molded instruments/devices, like a hog scraper or a nobby digger, knot buster LOL !!!! and go to town on your lumps and bumps, your sorest parts, scraping and kneading, rubbing and scrubbing. Hell, I can't tell you the moves they can put on ya.

I did endure about 5 weeks of it - I can't remember 2 or 3 times a week. whatever it called for, I was religious about attending to give it a chance.

We decided, for me, it was not giving me the desired results for my bruising/abuse. There is bruising involved... lot's of bruising.

This is where I really learned that Pepsi after therapy is painful. Water is my friend. But I needed whiskey/moonshine after ASTM.:wink::mad::(

I also coined the phrase "Good pain/bad pain; good injury/bad injury. I'm so confused.:confused::mad::confused::(

Maybe if you were just treating one area, without overlaying conditions, it could potentially/ideally help. I just think I had a mixed diagnosis and it was hard to find things that didn't hurt me in some way, because of so many problems.

But it was a horrid/failed experience for me! ! ! ! Just too much to deal with on me.

Hope someone has a positive story to tell about it.

Ahh, Astym is much like the Graston technique, the original post was from 2007 , so i must not have seen any info or videos relating to Graston technique at the time.

I would think less is best to start out with, especially if you have multiple places for treatment.
