Leaky Gut problems from foods in cans & plastic

I saw a story on this the other day and now I get a newsletter about it.

[BPA Linked to Leaky Gut
May 24th, 2010

Levels of this common chemical are almost 5 times higher than previously thought.

Consumers are routinely ingesting bisphenol A (BPA) by eating processed foods in cans and plastic. “It takes as little as one serving of canned foods to expose a person to levels of BPA that have been shown to cause harm in laboratory animals,” says Bobbi Chase Wilding, organizing director of Clean New York.

The latest lab research on BPA significantly links this chemical to a painful condition called “leaky gut.” Exposing both human intestinal cells and living rats to dosages of this chemical—10 times lower than what most governments consider safe—shows that BPA damages the intestines, allowing toxins and pathogens to enter the body more easily.

French scientists find that the gut “shows a very high sensitivity” to BPA, increasing intestinal inflammation. The result is abdominal discomfort, chronic muscle pain, depressed immune function, and poor nutrient absorption.]

Hmn.

If documentable, related to higher modern incidence of gluten sensitivity and other gut-based autoimmune condtions?

Besides the gut is the blood brain barrier, which works in a similar fashion and also has Zonulin channels!

When the BBB malfunctions things get into the brain which shouldn't and it is a huge contributor to Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. The latter, is showing major inflammation as a cause, and now the trials using IVIG are promising. That means that the brain is reacting to substances perhaps leaking thru the BBB?

This is scary!

Eden Organics is one company that does not use BPA lined cans. Canned tomatoes tend to pull out more BPA from the liners than other, non-acidic, foods. I used to use Muir Glenn Organic canned tomatoes alot but switched to the Pomi brand that comes in the lined cardboard containers which are BPA free. Muir Glenn is switching over to non-BPA lined canned for their tomato products with their next harvest season. It's good to know about the connection to leaky gut. The other thing about BPA is that your body will rid itself of pretty easily since it's not stored in fat like fire retardants and pthalates.

A great book to read about BPA and other petro chem toxicities we are exposed to is "Slow Death by Rubber Duck". It's an easy read and very informative.
