I'm 8 weeks from mva and had follow up with family doctor today. Because of ongoing PCS resulting in inability to return to work he wants me to see a neurologist. Family doctor is not comfortable keeping me off work this long. His first choice is unable to see me before my next appointment in three weeks. His second choice wants money upfront from me and then will reimburse me if and when insurance pays. (I don't know why they can't get it preauthorized. I may not have enough money to pay out of pocket.)

Is there any kind of designation I need to look for when considering a neurologist? Are there any questions I should ask as I decide who to see?

Do you live near an NCAA college? Check with their sport medicine department to find out who does their concussion management.

You should also check out www.tbilaw.com. You may be able to get a good referral. The worst thing you can do is get examined by a neurologist who does not have a sound understanding of concussion. Your family doctor is probably very weak in his concussion knowledge. Otherwise, he would understand your need to rest your brain.

Spend some time reading up at tbilaw.com. Attorney Gordon Johnson has one of the best resources for accident victims with head injuries.

A neuropsych assessment might be worthwhile. But again, you need to be careful. Read tbilaw.com. It will be the best information you will find. If your concussion symptoms end up being long term, you will need to be adequately prepared legally.

btw. The neuro who wants cash up from knows how long insurance companies take to pay, especially if there is litigation involved.

That's why he wants me to see neurologist to see if he says just PCS and it needs time or if there is something he's missing.

I'm only an hour away from University of Kentucky. I think I bookmarked something from there.

Kentucky is a no fault state so my insurance pays the first $10,000 in medical bills and then recovers it from the other company later.

I have read through quite a bit at tbilaw.com and I have an appointment with an attorney in the morning as a precautionary step.
