Results of 2hr GTT test

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mrs. D.....you asked me to send these results once I received them. Any insights? I tried to get them to order a fasting insulin but this is what they ordered.

12 hr fast before the test

Fingerstick = 100
Initial lab draw = 102
75 gm glucola
2 hr lab draw = 122

No other tests until skin biopsies and EMG/NCS which will be on 7/26 at Cleveland Clinic.

This link shows the various most common curves/values:

Without a more detailed test, you can't see hypoglycemia effects...but high effects are not present.

Low lows are just as damaging as highs. But your fasting was not really low. Back in the day, my fasting used to be 70.
But not any more!

There is an interpretation of low that I have heard. It is the sudden drop that the body perceives as "low" and not the actual number. Someone who normally functions at 130 daily (an older person) can drop to 100 and have some signs of low blood sugar if the drop is sudden. So some of the interpretation may be different for different people.

Low sugar occurs in the cells when serum levels are low or when the sugar is high and blocked from entering the cells (insulin resistance). In both cases the cells are starved.
This is why acetyl carnitine is good, because it carries fatty acids to the cells to use instead of glucose.

I love this test! This is the test that found the cause of my PN...but it showed up within the 2 hours, that was where all my "sugar action" was. And your results here don't tell us anything but that the patient is negative for diabetes, they have come down below 140 in 2 hours. And the test could have been read for 2 other ranges (at least when mine was done in 2002), Pre-Diabetes and Impaired Glucose Tolerance. (I have read of other names being used and the ranges being slightly different now, so depends on what and when you read.) Did you have your blood drawn at more times before the 2 hour time? If so, you could get those numbers and they could be quite helpful for you.

That's what happened to me too, the results given to my Dr. were "negative for diabetes". It was later that my neuro looked at all my numbers on the test and he knew how to read it and told me I had IGT. My father's family had some diabetics and others now like me are being seen to have sensory PN from only a "slight" sugar problem like this, over a long enough time period, translates into nerve damage just the same. My glucose may not have been too high much of the day but was after each meal and for years, who knows how many. I have to credit my terrible nerve pain for alerting me to my diabetic problem!

My numbers were: beginning: 90, then drank 75gms sweet drink, 1st 1/2 hr: 175, 1 hr: 234, 2 hrs: 135. I was IGT because I went over 200 but came back under 140 (normal) at 2 hrs. For Pre-Diabetic, go over 200 and come back to 140-199 at 2 hrs. For Diabetic, go over 200 and stay over 200 at 2 hrs. For normal, don't go over 200 and be under 140 at 2 hrs.

This just points out--

--that for people who are not frankly diabetic (yet), a 2-hour glucose tolerance test with only one or two draws post-drink may not be sufficient to reveal a glucose intolerance pattern (and a lot of doctors don't know a lot about this anyway).

When I have mine done, I have the scrip written for a 4 or 5-hour glucose tolerance test, to really see the pattern over time, with draws pre-drink and at every half hour until 4 hours, and I make sure concurrent insulin levels are done. Often the insulin numbers, and how they fluctuate with the glucose numbers, are just as revealing in determining if one has insulin resistance (an early sign of glucose intolerance).

No other labs drawn, only what was listed. I was kind of surprised by that myself but the lab said that is how they do it. Hopefully not another useless test that I was billed for. Ugh......

Well, I'm assuming that the results said that you were negative for diabetes and that's good news! There's always some good news if you look for it!

I'm still digesting the different GTT for which Mrs. D posted the url here. I haven't read all of it yet but in glancing all the way to the bottom, I see a chart that I may fit into. And I'm also digesting what Glenn wrote about the longer tests. Am so thankful for all of this information I am finding here on this site, also about all the supplements, not just their names but so much detail about them. I am amazed at the knowledge here! And thankful for it...:winky:
