Massage and SCS
 

Has anyone used massage as a therapy (or heck just as a nice treat!) after getting the SCS implant? I know that it wouldn't be a good idea right after surgery as the leads need to become more secure with the scar tissue but I was wondering after that. Have any of you had advantages and/or disadvantages from it? I've got a Dr. appointment next week and I will ask then, but I get so much more out of what you all have to say!!

It's been almost 5 months since the implant so I'm thinking on getting one, and I'll just make sure she doesn't massage the implant and battery area.

I just LOVE a good deep tissue massage [no worries, I will not venture there unless Doc gives the nod] and will be glad to hear of any who have had post-op massages to good effect!

I was getting about 1 a month before I changed jobs. Haven't hade one since then but would love to get one, I just did a lot of education with her before I let her work on me so she knew what areas to watch out for. Before I did my next one she had taken it on herself to do her own research about my SCS, RSD etc. Only problem was I was so relaxed I didnt want to drive home after words!

I have gotten a massage after my implant. I told the therapist that I had one and showed her where the leads were. I personally didn't get any benefit from the massage. It just flared me up and my muscles tensed back up. but that just may be my RSD. If you dont have RSD, I'd say go for it, just slowly introduce massage though. Don't first off get a deep tissue, maybe first just work the muscles a little bit and maybe pressure points and then a soft massage. I just dont think starting off with a extremely deep massage would be good. And make sure you turn your stimulator OFF when you are getting it. Because if he/she puts pressure around the leads you will be jolted with stimulation, and it hurrrts. I learned the hard way. But I'd say GO for a massage! Just slowly introduce and see how your body reacts :)

Oh and thats good advice as well. Get someone to drive you home FOR SURE the first time because you wont know how you react! I was never able to drive home after mine, I literally just dropped. The best ones are the therapists who come to your house. Might be 20 bucks more, but its worth it because you don't have to worry about the drive, and your muscles tensing up again, AND you save gas!!!:):grouphug:

Thanks for all the info guys. The person I go to knows my history and actually has patients with SCS implants so I'm guessing she knows what to expect. I just didn't know if anyone had any thoughts on the issue. I appreciate all your feedback!!!
