can rsd affect all surgery

I have started the process in doing what I need to do to get gastric bypass surgery. I began this before I knew what what was going on with my hand and wrist and the possibility of rsd. I have read lots of stuff on here about surgery but was not sure if it can affect a surgery that has nothing to do with rsd. Should I go ahead with it or put it off until I know better what is going on with my hand? Any thoughts on the matter would be greatly appriciated.
Thank you so much!

I don't the answer you seek.

But I can tell you this. I have RSD from my hips down. I have had 3 surgeries on one of my ankles in the past 1 - 1 1/2 years that was not due to RSD. I did not have a huge flare up as I expected to have one.

Maybe it was luck.

The surgeries had been on a body part with RSD, but the surgery was not for RSD.

Hi,

I have had multiple sugeries. If I have blocks before the surgery by the Anesteologist then I do good. If I don't then it spreads.

You just do what you feel in your heart you have to do. With my spreads I went through a lot of treatments to get them to calm down. It is time consuming too.

Talk to the Anesteologist before you go into surgery and get his opinion on what is best for you and if they can do a block before the surgery.

Good luck,
Ada

We are considered no touch patients but if surgery is a must..we just have to do our homework..as having knowledgeable Dr.'s with RSD talk with your surgeon..and take precautionery measures before and during the surgery..ie..performing blocks etc..I hope this helps you and I will keep you in my prayers that everything works out ok...

Keep us posted...Kathy:hug:

thanks everyone for your input. I will definately be talking to the docs before deciding anything. The reason I was for this surgery to begin with was to help my health outlook. It would help greatly if not eliminate my diabetes, help with the pressure on my knees and back from arthritis, lower my blood pressure and possibly help with the neuropathy in my toes (it's very mild and varies from time to time) This gives me more to think about though. I will be very cautious in my decision making. It's nice to know there are people out there who care and understand instead of just calling me "lazy" because I can't do everything I used to with just having the one hand to use now.

By the way, I forgot to mention, I posted some pics up of my hand a week and a month after surgery in the photo section here...does this look like RSD (in the second pic) ? I know you can't diagnose from just a pic, but like I said before, all the symptoms are there and they doctors don't know what to tell me...no rhyme or reason for what's going on.

I had a scs implanted, it made me spread... I had it removed... i was fine... I had major surgery on my stomach last summer and I was fine.

They can give you some precautionary meds... let your anesthesiologist know and they may be willing to give you some ketamine during your surgery. or do an epidural.. or do nerve blocks.
