Anyone know anything about them? My daughter lives in a small older 2 story home and has trouble keeping the upper level (where the bedrooms are) cool.

She might want to check and see if she needs extra insulation in the attic, or look into getting a whole-house fan. (big fan in the ceiling that sucks the hot air out of the upstairs into the attic which then gets sucked out of the attic and cools the house off)

Why not just install an attic fan?

The roof turbine fans are very good for cooling the under roof area of a house. They are pretty quiet, the big fan to exhaust the air is very noisy. The turbine is a good way to reduce the cost of cooling.

It is very important that there is adequate insulation in the ceiling of the second floor, otherwise it is almost impossible to keep it from getting hot.

I have a split level home, two different levels to the roof. I had a roof mounted power ventilation fan installed on the upper roof and a whole house fan installed in the hall ceiling of the upper level.

It helps, no duct work in the home for central air, electric baseboard heat and a wood burner in the family room. If you have ever had to go above the ceiling? like to replace a bath fan? wait until a cool day, going up there in mid summer will melt you!

I put a couple on my roof during our re-roof after hurricane Ike. They work.

Get ones that have been approved by Dade County Florida - ie, Lomanco. If ya go with a power ventilator, consider the solar powered jobs - no electrical hook-up.

As a side note - I had a couple on my roof when we lived in Florida. They didn't leak. Hey! Guess what! It's August 24th! 18 years ago today we lost a house (the turbine ventilators stayed). Hurricane Andrew. South Florida.
